I ran it (still my PB, and 2nd place) in 2013, but they changed the course last year.  Fantastically run event, and definitiely one of my highlights.  Spent a week up there and did Uluru etc, as well as the local Alice Springs area.  I stayed at the IBIS which was fine, although I think they do a pretty good deal with the Casino, which is now the base for the start/finish I believe.

I ran Alice Springs marathon last year.  Great event.  Coincided with the weekend of Henley on Todd so there were lots of people in town.

I haven't checked the dates but if the events are on the same weekend, make sure you book early for hotel and hire cars etc.  I stayed at the Casino for the weekend of the marathon but could not get a room in the week before when we were playing tourist.  Stayed at the Ibis during the week.  Both hotels were good.  Quite a few others to choose from in Alice also.

The course last year went out through the gap and turned left heading out to a turnaround near Emily and Jessie Gaps Nature Park.  The road is still open but there was almost no traffic.  Mostly flat and easy to run.  Not as scenic as I expected but the sunrise was great.   Volunteers at the drink stations were great and very encouraging.

Don't think I'll make it back this year but would definitely try to do it again.
