New Marathon in country Victoria on the O'Keefe Rail Trail. A great alternative to the hustle and bustle of Puffing Billy on the same day with a Half Marathon and 10km event as well. Also another option for the marathon tragic's or people wanting a quiet country run. Plenty of great winery's and eating options in the area as well. We don't have a lot of events up this way so will be great to support it.

I'm volunteering at this event as I'm injured.  Loving that we have a running festival but very disappointed is the same day as Puff Bill. Obviously not a problem this year but I do hope it doesn't clash next year as Puff is one of my favorite races.

Looks good.
Mr bingo's  family is from Bendigo, so I could imagine it wouldn't be a hard sell. Might be able to get there if we can get sitters.
If I did it, it will be the half.

Robert W, I will stay in Heathcote, I have called more than 30 hotels and there is no accommodation can be found anywhere  from 30kms away to Bendigo due to Groovn the Moo concert

Oh wow!!! I only just saw this one! It looks fabulous! Not something I will be able to do this year, I wouldn't have enough time to train for it or save up with Traralgon a month later that I have been targeting. But I am going to put it down for next year! I will be interested to hear reports about this race afterwoods. I love country Victoria, and something off road that I could get to by public transport sounds good.

Hi Lionheart, Heathcote will be quieter anyway. Looks like there might be a few of us doing it. I only live 40 minutes down the road so looking forward to something over this side for a change. Lovely county over here too.

Weather forecast 11-15 degrees, cloudy, perfect weather for running.

Just to reminder everyone that the water stations are limited - only 6 on the course and only water provided.

I will bring my hydration vest.

The course is not flat at all, there is big hill at 14km mark.  I do not think there will lots of marathon runners, I believe I will on my own most time on the course.

I ran the rail line marathon at Lilydale in Nov last year. Does anyone know whether this is hillier or easyier. I do recall running up quite a slope early on at Lilydale.

Hi Barramundiboy, except for one big bump around the 14km mark (as pointed out by Lionheart) it is either relatively flat or gently undulating, probably no worse then Lilydale, I'm doing the half.

I'm not doing a marathon until Traralgon this year.

I ran a bit of the trail a few weeks go from Heathcote out towards Lake Eppalock and didn't find it difficult. You coming down for it???

Thanks Robert W. Just what i wanted to hear. I'm hoping to,but not 100per cent sure yet.
I would certainly love to run another Vic rail line. Enjoyed the Lilydale run and with this one being an end to end i think that would be better.
Its always a bit of a project running interstate but i hope things fall into place. If not have a good half marathon.

How'd you all go? It was a windy day but lucky for the marathoners it was a tail wind. I was at the start which was very cold and not much better at the drink station. At least we had bottles not cups which would have meant cold and wet hands. Enjoyed cheering you all on and how funny was the false start x 3 :D

Hope you had a good race in the quarter marathon Long Arms, some good competition in that one as well as all the other races. Sorry about the weather, perfect for months then we produce this for the race.

It was a great day out Loubee. Strong winds on the way out for the quarter and half marathoners but kind tail wind for the marathoners. I was happy with second place in the quarter. Young Matt from Bendigo ran a great race for the win. There were some quality marathoners out there today - 2.31 is fast on a trail!

Well well what a change from the barmy days of NQ. Had a great wkend allbeit hectic. Thought i was gonna get blown away this morning until someone told me the wind was gonna carry us to Heathcote. It certainly did until about 30 kms when it started blowing me into the ground. Shoulda been an over 60s pb for me but for some reason that i cant fathom it blew out to 3-44 Everything was in our favour but the legs would'nt turn. Love running the old Vic rail trails and i'll be back.

Well done Barramundi Boy, we felt the wind drop and wasn't sure what it would be like further along.  Hope you weren't running with the 3.30 pacer who came in at 3.12. Think a few may have blown up in that group.

Thanks Long Arms and Loubie. Yes the 3-30 group passed me going up the big hill out of axedale. I was about 5mins under 3-30 pace then and thought these guys are gonna break 3hrs . Not surprised some blew up. Traralgon is the next rail trail i think.
Looking forward to it.

Thanks Loubee. You are such a wonderful volunteer!

At 26kms mark, when you passed the water bottle to me, I forgot to say "thank you". I think I started fading at that point of time. I had chat with a guy who are local but working at Hongkong and also a lady who are a local ultra marathon runner but want to crash sub 4 for this one, I think she achieved it.

In summary:

1. hills: there are a small but long one at 14kms and big hilly one at 17kms mark, otherwise the course is pretty flat.

2. strong wind but like everyone else mentioned it was a tail wind. lucky.

3. the trail is well maintained and in very good shape even after some heavy rain since last Friday.

4. plenty of apples and bananas after finish. A charted bus to return to Bendigo.I remember I have to drive to Wollies to buy some for myself for Lilydale marathon last year.

5. a charted bus to return to Bendigo

Everything runs smoothly and thanks for all the volunteers ,   definitely I will be back next year.

Great day out besides the weather, doing the half was hard work going out, but enjoyed the tailwind coming home, reflected in my 2nd half was 6 minutes quicker. Really well organized for a 1st running, will be back next year to do the full. Thanks loubee the volunteers were fantastic. I saw Long Arms receiving his podium medal well one.

See you at Traralgon Lionheart and Barramundi Boy, I'm doing the marathon there.

Whenever you run a negative split its a bonus Robert Ware.

This has been on my radar for a while, like the idea of point to point on a rail trail. Bit of research for a future cycling adventure.

Was on the list last year and traded it in for the convenience of coburg 24hr. Will probably do the same this time. :).
Travelling to India in April and have found and locked a road marathon for april 9th :)

Good luck and enjoy the run!

No real expectations although that tailwind from last year sounds like it would be fun!

Dead pan flat and a good quality crushed granite/dirt trail as well D43 and they will be put matting over the cattle grates which number around 20 odd. Plenty of water in Lake Eppalock which makes a good background as well.

Plenty of good winery's around Heathcote as well if you want to test them afterwards.

3.39!! just don't blow me over at the start thanks, 4.30 or around for me as usual.
