I have a Garmin 235 which has been useful for me as a very average runner. Lately the wrist based HR is not working properly. It wonít start until about 4 km into a run and lately it seems to stick to 163. With all the hype about the new 245, Iím thinking of updating but in reality, all I want is an accurate HR. To this end, am I better off spending $100 for a chest strap or should I go the whole hog and splurge on a 245? Any hints on getting the wrist based monitor to work properly? Iíve cleaned it, applied water to my wrist but just isnít what it used to be.

What about sending it back to Garmin?  Worst case they should offer you a cheap refurbished watch as a replacement.

All Garmin HRMs are, from my experience, unreliable.

Wrist optic HRM pretty useless, across all Garmin models, particularly when running over 80% max. The chest straps a bit better but hardly robust.

I've given up on all of them.

Having issues with my 935. Slow or tempo work the HR is ok but interval work is rubbish. The HR stays too low until 400-500m into the rep.

Exactly.

Up the pace/elevation/effort and the stats become useless. Not just my personal experiences but regularly see this in my strava feed. Altho' it seems most optic HR sensors have this issue, it would appear that the 935 is over represented.

Not that too many complain as it makes your Vo2 max stats look brilliant haha.
