I have been running in a pair of Nike size 8's for about a year and they finally gave up so I had to buy some new shoes.

I ended up buying a new pair of Nike's which are size 8.5. I'm a bit worried that they might be too big. The store only had this shoe in an 8.5 so i didn't try the 8's and I think my old shoes might have been a bit small anyway.

Do you think it is better for a running shoe to err on the side of being too big or too small?

I'd prefer a slightly too large pair having lost toenails previously through lack of room and downhill runs.

Its a smart choice to err on the slightly larger side.
I purchased in Honolulu last September a pair of New Balance 587s which were great until I realized that they were a tad too small and these gave me bloodied toes. When I was buying these I had other things on my mind and the salesman asked me if I wanted to try the size up!
