Comrades,
Does anyone have a comment on how Asics sizes compare to New Balance? Are they similar? Does Asics tend to be a touch smaller?
Reason I'm asking- up till recently I ran in NB 1220, size 15, wide fit. With the demise of the 1220 I switched to the Asics 1090, but had trouble getting a size 15 pair in Sydney- ended up getting a regular width 15 rather than their wide fit model.
I'm happy with the shoes for runs of up to about 3 hours, but longer than that it's obvious the shoes are not wide enough. Last Saturday I did a 4.5 hour run and did a 7 hour run the next day, Sunday, and now have some lovely blisters.
The Stringers Sports website has 1090s in wide fit and up to size 17 (!!!). Just wondering if a size 15 wide NB is equivalent to a size 15 wide Asics (ie is the sizing of the two companies very similar?), or should I order a size 16 Asics instead?
Cheers....

Mister G, at last the tables have turned & I can answer one of your questions for a change ;) .
I have run in both NB1220's & Asics 20xx & have found that I take the same size in both. B)

Mister G,
I have used the 1220, but have tended to use Brooks as I find they have wider fits. I have never been entirely comfortable with Asics as they are not wide enough and the innersoles have a tendancy to crumple under by foot or slide out the back of the shoe.
But last week I found a pair of Mizuno Wave Regades. They have been great so far, including a 33k run for their first use. Plenty of cushioning, support and above all a wide fit.

Mister G,
Although I have a fairly small foot I've found Asics a slightly smaller fit than NB. I wear a 6 1/2Asics(trabuco &nimbus) and a 6NB trail shoe (female sizings).
kazz.

Thanks guys, yes it was my impression that Asics was a narrower shoe than NB, if nothing else. Apparently the Sydney Running Centre at Edgecliffe stocks 1090s in a 16, I'm going to go there later this week and check them out.
Cheers!

Mr G
I have done a comparison of the 1221 (apparently current top selling model in the States, 1220 came out in 2000 and is no longer listed except in close-out sales) and 1090 on RoadRunnerSports.
They recommend to buy both a 1/2 size larger than your street shoes. In other words, the sizing is similar but on the small side .Both are available in wide widths.
The 1221 is especially recommended for heavier, high mileage runners while the 1090 just has a mid-mileage recommendation.
From the description it seems that a lot more engineering has gone into the 1221 than the 1090 which is basically a low-end Asics and that is reflected in the price tag US$130 v US$70.

Phantom,
I have tried the 1221 and I'm not fond of it. It is very different to the 1220 I used to wear (and liked very much), but the Asics 1090 feels a "1220-esque" shoe. Also has better grip than the 1220, which is a bonus.
Pity about the price increase as well.... thanks for that research, all the same.
