Vaseline works for me. Most pharmacies have a cheaper house brand of petroleum jelly which is the same thing. Be quite liberal with it. After a while, when any chafing has gone away, you can probably cut back on the use of Vaseline, or stop using it.

Bodyglide. I've got solid legs and this stuff is fantastic. Most running shops sell it.

chopstick, vaseline will do the trick, but me & my little bunch of clients/victims have found that k-y jelly (or similar water based personal lubricant) does a much better job!! it will absorb into your skin as you apply it, but as you start to run & perspire it is activated. no where near as messy as vaseline, doesn't rub off on your clothes, comes in neat little tubes, can be used for all chafing areas & you don't need to use heaps!! you may get some interesting looks...but what the hey!!?

Rubbing any sort of lubricant between my legs is not for me. I find that bicycle pants/stretchies under my running shorts work very well. It might not be the coolest look but who cares.

With you on the stretchies Journeyman. The look will be vastly improved with the socks down the front and not the back.
Pat Rafters Bonds Comfy Undies are my choice for running. Similar to the bicycle pants.

Bodyglide for me, works superbly in wet or dry conditions. I sweat heaps and it still works after 3 hours, best thing since sliced bread.
Bit expensive but I simply would not be without it.

Vaseline is cheap but is crap, marks like crazy on light clothing especially on an off road run where there is a bit of dust on the trail.

Happy running

I'm not sure why I should care that Vaseline might mark my running shorts in an area that I can't see ... but in any case, I've never had any marking at all from it.

I only ever have a problem with chafing on longer runs, say more than 12km.

After a few horrendous occasions recently, when the inside thighs looked like mince-meat, even after liberal applications of vaseline, I took to wearing the 'bike shorts'.

These worked a treat in preventing the chafing, but um, ah, let's say kept the 'landing gear' stowed a bit too tight.

About 2 months ago I first tried Bodyglide, and it has been fantastic. No mess, lasts all day.

I used to apply so much vaseline that when it soaked into my running shorts, it appeared as if I had suffered a 'little accident'. This used to upset the better half no end also, as the shorts then had to be soaked in hot water prior to washing to remove same.

Bodyglide = beautiful. Smoother than catshit on linoleum. B) :)

Blue Dog, you're on fire mate.

I hear you about the mince meat and landing gear, very funny.

Bodyglide is the stuff, use it and you'll never go back, but I have to say I don't like the smell of the stuff, smells as if a rat has crawled into my shorts and died after 30k.

If we all ran around without clothes, we wouldn't have any chaping problems.

If Eve hadn't eaten off the tree in the Garden of Eden, we would now be able to spend out clothes money on something else instead.

Perhaps someone could design a range of coloured fig leaves just for runners.

As I understood chaffing it was actually the thighs rubbing together that becomes a problem. Thus running naked would not help and you'd all kinds of flappage going on.

I haven't tried Bodyglide but the comments about the smell has put me off already. I use zinc and caster oil. Comes in a varity of sizes and is very cheap! Doesn't smell at all, works perfectly and has great healing properties, making it great to use as a preventitive or cure. I tried lots of creams and am very impressed with how quickly chaffing heals with zinc and caster oil!

Glad to see some others supporting of "Free Running", which is what Cool Runners do nude! :D

Although Chafing can still be a problem, at least the application of Vaseline will not stain your clothes. B)

Training and competitive running are however problematic, since the TAN Running Series appears to be the only organised series of Nude Runs in Australia. <_<

Anyone heard about this new product called 3B or B3. It is supposed to prevent chafing and is available at pharmacies and some supermarkets.

Being nude 24/7 is a lot healthier for our bodies, as clothes encourage buildup of sweat and bacteria.

I was talking on the phone yesterday to a farmer friend at Palmerston North in New Zealand, and he said that they had 52 inches (1300mm) of rain fall on 139 days in total for 2004. In Feb they had a 200-year flood.

Oz could do with 139 days of rain a year to rebuild the water tables. Be great for 24/7 nude runners.

Thanks for the tip Jalan,

Looks like it'll have to be bodyglide.
It's just a pain because I only know one place in Melbourne that stocks it and it's on the other side of town from me.

Some guys may shudder however I have never had a problem with chaffing since wearing running shorts that resemble bike pants. The girls have the idea.

As pointed out it is the skin rubbing on itself that generally causes chaffing and bike pants make those thighs glide past each other.

The problem I found with body glide etc was forgetting to put it on or take it with you and then too late. Now I only have these running shorts I have forgot what chaffing feels like and they are no more expensive than normal shorts.

You could always wear light shorts over the top. I just purchased some 'Linebreak' hybrid bike pants today from rebel. They seem a lot lighter and fitted than my normal dri-fit bike pants. Hmmmm just checked the receipt and they are called compression shorts!!

I don't have special running short shorts that are as skimpy as a miniskirt lol. So I just wear bike shorts under my normal knee length black shorts. They do the trick well. I used to have to put lanaline (that stuff from sheep) between my legs when i used to be a glassy at the pub. That really sucked when i got chafing the first time for 10 hours straight and couldnt do anything about it. Once I used the lanaline it was all good, however it was a bit sticky. Perhaps some sort of lube or bodyglide stuff would have been better but i was unaware of that sort of stuff back then.

I know of some runners who have eliminated this problem simply by getting a larger size of shorts.
I wear a medium singlet but have large size shorts but gladly have never been a chaffing sufferer. :)

I must admit that when I first started running I only had a pair of bike pants (without the chamois) and I used to run in them. I then got some running shorts when I started running but have always worn my bike pants underneath. I tried the shorts alone last week and did notice a bit of chafing, and then one of my harriers club buddies suggested that the bike pants stop the chafing. They certainly do in my experience because I hadn't had it until I didn't wear them!

Good luck - I am sure you will find the tight pants the best move.

I'm a guy and the bike pants are fine for me, although I'm just a beginner and am only usually out walking/running around for around an hour (give or take) at a time. The tackle seems to be fine however excessive heat is never good for them but I haven't felt  any problems thus far. And the bike pants do definitely eliminate the chafing for me. Chafing is caused by the rubbing of skin together. Basically most of us have upper thighs which rub together. A lucky few do not and thus they don't suffer from chafing.
And I bet the media are all over that since they love a good perve factor for their ratings.
