Any thoughts on the following three choices (from Rebel):

Last season's Reebok Road DMX, marked down to $120 (down from $180) - the bargain seems hards to resist

or Adidas Supernova $180 - with the famous "28 day try out return-no-questions-asked" offer

or cough up (ugh) $220 for Asics Gel Nimbus

I don't pronate, want some cushioning, and intend to do alot of mileage in them - training for GCM.

Any comments very much appreciated!

Don't know where you live Enzuber, but if it's around Melbourne then you can get Asics much cheaper (approx. 25% discount) at several places, as well-documented in other posts, eg. here .

If your foot is relatively wide like mine (compared to its length that is) then the 20xx series is good - $150 at Leo Russell, cheaper at Vic Market.

Enzuber,

Might pay to see a proper running shop, rather than a discount store.

I've got nothing against Asics, I wear them myself. However, you'd do well to make sure that your feet are fitted to the right sort of shoe.

Once you've got the correctly fitted shoe, you can then shop for value.

Colin, in general what you say may be true and certainly applies to buying running shoes in the market, but places such as Leo Russell sell at discount not because they are less qualified or experienced or give lesser service than other running stores (in fact the opposite is generally true), but because they operate with low overheads and no advertising - relying on reputation and word of mouth.

Have you seen a podiatrist? I have never thought there was much point, until I did for the first time last week in desperation. I have had some bad (and expensive) shoe experiences (usually buying on impulse), including my current knee problem which I picked up after being suckered by the Adidas special and a pushy salesperson and buying a pair of Supernovas. The podiatrist checked me out thoroughly, looked at my collection of old shoes, showed how the Adidas has caused my problem, and recommended some suggested models in the various brands. Best $60 I ever spent...
On the subject of the Adidas, I found they almost had too much cushioning, with hardly any support and after a couple of weeks the sponge at the heel was already crumpling.

If you're after value for money, cushioning and durability why not try the Asics 1090?

Thanks for the feedback.
I'm based in Sydney - thinking I should really hunt out a shop which specialises in running gear ... any suggestions?

Perhaps try the Runners Shop, Clovelly Rd.

http://www.runnersshop.com.au

They know their stuff, and their prices are very reasonable.

... or the Sydney Running Centre in the Edgecliff Centre above the Railway Station. Damian Tancred really knows his stuff. Highly recommended.

Enzuber, Action's recommendation of Damien at Sydney Running Centre is spot on. I won't buy my shoes anywhere else. And it's pretty close to you in Surry Hills too. Good luck.

I bought a pair of ASICS 2090 from Clovelly a couple of weekends ago. 1st time there and received Great Service, Great Price and will continue to go there even though I live in the inner west.

Thanks for the ongoing feedback.
I'm definitely going to check out the shop in Clovelly this weekend. Their online site is good too.

For Melbourne CR's, Gunn Runner sponsor Brooks (www.runhappy.com.au)will be sending their in-house podiatrist to discuss choosing the right shoe following the Gunn Run on 13th April.

We had Ollie out last year and it was a really good, informative session.

It is not a Brooks sell - the primary aim is provide information on what you should be looking for in a shoe, so that you keep on coming back to the Gunn Runners with healthy feet. :D

Gunn Runners are free, anybody else who wishes to come along and isn't running, please do so. $3 donation to the Gunn Runners support fund.

I've had a lot of experience with different running shoes and there can be a huge difference.

It's not something you want to 'try'.

Don't go by Athletes Foot advice or that footprint test- they are always helpful and friendly but seldom have correct advice.

Go to a podiatrist simply to ask them which shoes you should run in and they can check out your feet and running and be very specific.

The $50 on a podiatrist visit is well worth it to avoid injuries.

Don't change something that works. If you have been using a particular make or model that has been ok for you and hasn't given any problems then stick with them. A lot of new models look flashier and brighter, but might give you trouble after four of five weeks. I got sucked in one year, tried on some Kayanos and had nothing but problems, corns blisters the lot. If I had of stick with the Adrenalin it would of saved me $ 200 a visit to the Podiatrist and a host of other stresses. Stick with what is tried and proven !!!!!!!!!!!!

enzuber,
I don't know if you've bought your new shoes yet & I know everyone has different needs in footwear but I bought myself a pair of asics nimbus the other day (after contemplating for a while)& had my first run in them yesterday. All I can say is wow!!! It was like floating on a cloud! The cushioning is great, no rubbing or blisters after 10.5km on a hot humid day. I don't pronate & also plan to do a lot of milage in training for the GC half. When I tried them on in the shop they were just so comfy (a good indicator I think)I thought I'd cough up the dollars, & needless to say I'm not regretting it.
As I said, I know we're all different & different shoes suit different people but I remembered your post & thought I'd share my "nimbus"experience with you.
