hey all, just dropping by to ask about what you all do with your old running shoes. Im a student artist in collage and am a runner as well. Running rocks, but i have 10 yrs worth of running shoes that im having a hard time parting with! :) What i really would like to know also is if theres any good use you've found for them of any little crafty project you've used them for!? I guess running shoes sort of find a soft spot in your heart and have tons of sentamental(sp?) feelings tied to them! thanks!

Having size 14 shoes, I keep a few old pairs outside our front door as a crime prevention measure! :)
So far seems to work!

Wash the car in them. Mow the lawn in them.

I use to give my old running shoes to the dog to play with. Absolutely loved them.

Having run in Port Moresby for quite a few years the less well off members of the running club really used to appreciate the opportunity of old cast off shoes. One person I remember up there ran a half marathon in a pair of soccer boots, complete with studs, minus laces, and a fair few used were really over the moon with a pair of used Dunlop KT26s!

As I am a canoeist I use them as water shoes (as I'm too tight to actually buy some)

How about using them in an abstract statue commemorating the spirit of the CoolRunner! ;)

I do as superflake suggests and use them in the yard or walking the dog.

I also have a couple of boys that wear the same size shoes so I pass them down. I always stop running when they hit 900k and there is still reasonable (non running) life in them. They may need a scrub, but they still look ok. Maybe you could scrub them and put them in a charity bin.

After that; The bin.

i use mine as house shoes. That way i have always got good shoes for running and walking. I change over shoes at 1000km.

Cliff Young couldn't part with his old joggers. He had around 25 pairs on his backdoor porch at his Otway farmlet.

There were another 19 retired pairs at Mary's place at Indented Head, where there is a groove worn in the beach track all the way along the Esplanade to St Leonards.

Several (sober) locals have reported still seeing Cliffy's ghost jogging by from time-to-time near the boat ramp or next to the Caravan Park.

Hang them from the roof in your garden shed. After 10 or so years you will have a good display of the evolution of the running shoe - particularly if most are the same brand.
You will also notice that the rubber on the soles of the older shoes wore better than later models.

I've seen telephone wires decorated with old pairs of running shoes. Could be an urban legend but some farmer down in NZ's South Island reportedly had cast off bras lining their roadside fence line. They had to remove it because it was proving to be a distraction to motorists. Perhaps you might like to start something similar with running shoes.

Drill some holes in the soles, paint them a bright colour, fill them with potting mix and grow a few flowers in them on the front porch. I guarantee you will get lots of comments/attention..............and they look quite unique!!

I have read that some race organisers can pass them off to someone less fortunate if they are in good condition.
But personally I like to keep every pair of shoes I get. I have a pair that is about twelve years old. They are disgustingly worn with holes in the soles but I cant bear to throw them out. I just wear them in the back yard and around the house.

I hate Nike but I also hate looking around so they were the best thing avaliable at the first shop. The other ones I use to skate board in when I was a kid.

Thats funny Menark,

For someone that hates Nike you actually went to the trouble of putting a nice clear photo of them on the thread with a a lovely distinguishable yellow tick in prominent view.

Any publicity is good publicity....

Lifewithout! , there are some good counsellors out there for this kind of attachment so dont fret..

Taking photo's is a great way to remember our dear departed shoes and past loves.

How about a group photo of the little darlings ?or give each one an individual photo and then set up an album just for your shoes with notes underneath. Then their memory is preserved & cherished forever.

Hey! maybe you could make it in to a trendy coffee table type book, in an art form special edition and have each pair of shoes set in a studio shot with a different theme.

Now thats original, sure to be a real conversation piece.

Worst case scenario, take a deep breath and throw them out.

I wear mine to work after I've finished running in them. Not for everyone I know, but I can get away with it and so much more comfortable than normal shoes or steel capped boots.

I don't know how true this is, but I heard that Nike recycles the shoes by donating the rubber to a recycler which turns them into sporting courts for underpriveleged areas/kids

I keep mine, especialy since they cost between the 85- 100 dollar range. I'm a heel runner so I need lots of cusion. When my shoes start to break down I place a dr sholes running insert in them and off I go for another running season.( late spring, to late fall. When I finaly cave and buy a new set of running shoes, I retire my old ones to gardening and grocery shopping. Sauconys the only shoe I seem to gravitate to. I love the waffle soles on them... takes alot of the shock out of impact. :)
