Hi there,

I've just starting running as part of training to get fit to play soccer. I've been advised to get a real pair of running shows rather than run in cross trainers.

The crew at Active feet suggested the Brooks Glycerine at $220. This is more than I'm looking to spend at present. Any suggestions for the same type of shoe?

You'll find that Active Feet, while being a good store, are quite expensive. You should be able to find a pair cheaper if you shop around.
How much do you want to spend?

Probably only about $150. I'm only running about 10 - 15 km per week at present, and I'm not sure how much I will continue to run during the soocer season, hence not really wanting to spend up big.

However if I keep getting fitter and enjoying the running I may run longer and further, not sure at this point.

You'll definitely get something good for that much. The Glycerin is a cushioned shoe, so I would ask the sales people (hopefully they'll know what they're talking about) to show you the cushioned models of other brands such as Asics (Nimbus), New Balance, Nike, Adidas (Supernova Cushion), Mizuno, Saucony, and Brooks. Remember to try on a few and see which feels right on your feet and wallet.
Cheers

I saw them at Sims Sports in Moonee Ponds last week for $160 I think it was. You could give them a call and see if they are still on sale. I've also considered buying my next pair online from here as the cost including shipping from the US would work out at about $140 AUD.

Thanks moby, will go to sims and check it out. I tried calling them for a price but they said as a matter of store policy they don't give prices over the phone.

It might pay to check out the Brooks clearance store at Airport West too.

Hit the Smith St. factories in Collingwood. Brooks have an outlet and you may, by fluke, find that specific model for significantly less. Nike and Adidas are out there as well...

Sims don't give out store prices on the phone because the main people who call are sales assistants from opposition stores verifying lower prices (I used to be one of them). I know they've got some good Adidas shoes under $100 at the mo, the Supernova Cushion is definitely worth a look if it is one of them.

The cheaper model I've looked at is the Brooks Illusion.

Has anyone used these?

Any good or bad reports?

Brooks Illusion pop up reasonably often on eBay though. Very cheap.

The Brooks Illusion has not been available for about a year. It's replacement is the Radius.

If you are looking to buy through the internet, why not try a pair of Loco Xpressos for wide feet at $125 a pair? I have had mine for 2 weeks and they are good. They have plenty of room for the toes so no more black toenails.

I only buy shoes on the Internet that I have already tried, so that I'm happy with the size and fit. Then, I buy that model repeatedly on eBay. I can't try on Locos, so that won't be an option for me until I can.
