I have been running now for about a year and have gradually stretched my runs out so that I now run a long run of about 18 Km once a week in preparation for a half marathon. Unfortunately my feet are wide, flat and pronate excessively, and as a result I suffer from shin splints. When I first started running my shin spints flared up and stopped me from running at all, so I saw a Pod who put me into 2/3 foot off the shelf orthotics (off his shelf, with a little extra wedge added. Not sure if they are widely available in shops)and recommended I buy a pair of Beasts. These changes made a big difference. I still suffer from shin soreness, but with regular icing and staying off my feet every second day, I can run with little or no pain. However, after running with slight pain and wearing shoes that feel like bricks for a year I am looking into getting fitted with some customised orthotics. Just wondering if anyone can give me an idea on how much this should cost, and what type of orthotic would be best. I'm also wondering if having customised orthotics would allow me to run in something lighter and less clunky. Last but not least, I'm hoping someone has some suggestions for alternatives to the Beast if I do not go for the new orthotics.

So many questions and so little time!! Hope some of you can help,

James.

Rustyrunner,

I too have
1)Flat feet
2)Over pronate

and used to wear Brooks Beasts. They give a good ride but are very heavy.
Last weekend I got a pair of ASICS Gel-Evolution
that are fantastic.
They feel good, are not heavy in comparison and give a great ride!
I line mine with my POWERstep inserts from
http://heelspurs.com/index.html as I have had PF
2 months ago
Good Luck!

Custom orthotics are not cheap but do last a few years with some adjustments and you are probably looking at $400 or there abouts. I can't recommend what sort of orthotics you would need but a good pod will tell you what suits you best.

Once you have your orthotics you should be able to run in much lighter shoes. I use a neutral shoe these days and let the orthotic do the adjustment work and this seems to work best for me.

If you want an alternative to the Beast, New Balance also have a very stable shoe but I tried that and felt like I had a couple of bricks on my feet. I run in Loco shoes these days and am very happy with those.
