I'm planning to enter the 2006 Gold Coast half marathon and it's time to buy new shoes. Should I be looking at light weight or cushioned or supportive or... what? What is good for endurance/distance running - mostly on roads?

I was going to go in to an Athlete's Foot shop to see what their fancy foot computer sez, (are they going to sell me the right stuff?) or is there somewhere else on the coast I should go for tailored advice?

'jeez I'm full of questions!

I'm a 55 kilo female, at this stage just looking at finishing (running all the way), not particularly interested in speed. I'll start a new thread when I'm lookin' to do a full mara in sub 2h :D :P

HI

I don't know anything about Gold Coast shops but I suspect unless you are really serious about a sub 2 hour marathon!!! your training shoes should do. There are a number of threads about shoes if you go to the category section of Cool running.

All the best....Plu

My personal opinion, after trying on, buying and test running 10k is, that the ideal shoe for halfmarathon is Loco Banditos.
The way it feels on the foot is something You could not get from any other shoes. They do not restrict the natural feet movements, they do not alter natural biomechanics, the cushioning is just right and there is no restrictive control of the natural foot movement. Locos have also more cushioning shoes.
You find the link from the CR home page, there is shop in Brisbane....
Try them before You make any decision.

I bought my Asics DS Trainers for track work, liked them so much I used them for 5 & 10 km races and finally stretched to doing a half in them. They are the lightest most comfortable running shoe I have had.

Stick to your usual training shoes but make sure they have k's in them already (but not too many).

I tend to wear a reasonably new pair in important races - where the shoes have done 100-500k. I think you need a few k's in them to ensure you don't get blisters etc. After 500k they lose a bit of bounce. After 800-900k throw them out.

[/indent]Run ultras and I am lead to believe you will appreciate the extra half size ;)

Maybe wash them and put them out in the sun but it is risky.

Plu's idea is the best one, save the shoes for the last 3 days in Colac, or change into them in
Jindabyne.

Apart from that, try 2 pair of socks or extra thick socks, there are some great very thick running - hiking socks available.

Material of the shoes deteriorates very quickly on the direct sun and heat, so insted of shrinking You may destroy them ?
