When is the best time to start training in new shoes if I'm planning to use them in the Canberra marathon this April? Also, how many km's are they generally good for (Asics GT2100).

I'd be looking at the middle of February - run in them 2 - 3 times a week for 10km or so.
During March run 21km in them a couple of times, then 30 ish km a couple of times.
I like to have run 130 - 180km in a pair of shoes before a marathon. Comfortably broken in, but no real wear on them. Don't run too many km - nothing worse than realising the tread on your shoes is going a couple of weeks before you plan on running a marathon in them!
As to how many km you will get out of them - too many variables! Weight, surface run on, how many days in a row you wear them etc.
I'd be looking at 900km plus, some people will look at 1,200km plus.
Always have at least two pairs of shoes you run in and alternate them, as this will help you get more km out of them.

I'd reckon you'd want at least 100km in them, including at least two longer runs (around 30km or more).

It's not so much a case of breaking them in, but finding out how the shoes work for you. You want get some longer runs in them to see how your feet are in them, whether there are any potential blister issues, and how the fit is.

Winston - good to see you posting again!

Technically you shouldnt need to break in a pair of runners. You should be able to pick them off the shelf once fitted correctly and run whatever distance you usually run in them. The Asics 2100 might give you 600-800km life depending upon your body weight and running style. Ive found with the asics a cushioned innersole goes a long way as they lack a little bit under the forefoot. Hope this has helped.
