Hello!

I'm new to the City 2 Surf race but an experienced runner.

How bad would you classify the initial congestion of the race?  For how many kms will I have to run at the same speed as the rest of the pack?

I unfortunately missed the opportunity to get a seeded/preferred start...

Best,
Garrett

Hi Garrett, last year I decided to run with the flow at the start and did the first k in about 5m45. 3 years ago, I started off hard and hit the 2k mark at Ayaz carpets in around 8m15 and found a fair bit of space after that. If you can manage the first 2ks in sub4 with a lot of weaving, you should find it easier after this.

Also, the 3km marker (first km marker) is not correct, it should be between LJHooker and the lights in double bay.

Its painful unless you're a seeded or preferred runner.  If not it could take a few k's to get into any rhythm and the first km especially will be awful.  Good luck.  Hope you do well enough to get yourself a better start next year (that's if this year doesn't turn you off the run)

I guess the key thing is to get there early and get to the front of the pack.  It gets pretty wild through the first couple of km - I copped and handed out a couple of elbows last year, although '03 was okay - but does settle down.  Only thing is people tend to be everywhere until after the Victoria Road intersection

One thing I noticed last year is the pack isn't good at following the racing line.  You can often duck out of the pack to follow the correct line, Rose Bay being a prime example, where the vast majority of the runners seem to be stuck in the left gutter.

If you're in good nick and haven't done anything stupid through the first 7-8km, you'll clean up through Heartbreak.  If you're an hour or under it's fairly clean sailing from the roundabout onwards.

the year before last, I started in group B. I worked out that there were at least 20,00 people in front of me at the time that I started. I passed 10,000 of them before the finish. I did and would define that as severe congestion.
all the best on your debut C2S  :)
