Am just wondering if anyone has a video, or knows where I can get one, of the 1982 Commonwealth Games Marathon. Am just reading Deeks book and it bought back the memory of that race. It was the race that got me interested in  running and was one that was brilliant to watch.
The times in the last few km's that Deek and Ikanga changed the lead and the effort that Deek put in just to catch are things that I would love to watch again.
Am happy to provide or pay for video if anyone knows where I can get a copy.

Likewise! This has to be one of the most requested running videos of all time ... probably along with the 1983 Rotterdam Marathon, too! Perhaps if we all got together with a signed petition to the ABC, they may be able to generate some tapes of the run?

I think the AIS would have this, so it may be worth contacting them.  There is nothing on their WEB site about a video renting service, so some negotiating may be required.

why not try  abc archives and email them about your request. I think a lot of people would be interested.

Thanks everyone for your responses. have been down South (in Busselton, home of Australia's newest ironman event!) for 4 days and have just got back.
Had a look on the site you suggested 26miles, had no luck, couldnt even find a search link. So have emailed the site and will let you know how I get on.

I have this marathon on VCR and have transferred it on to DVD.

Happy to send it on if you still didn't find a copy

Hi Anthony ('antman'),

Not sure if you realised, but this thread was alive 7 years ago & 'Pabags' may not be around anymore (???). However I am sure there would be plenty on CoolRunning who would be very interested in the video... particularly the guys in this thread (link) who are collating 'old' Australian running videos & putting them on YouTube.

I'd also like a copy of the 1982 Commonwealth Games marathon. I have the 1983 Rotterdam Marathon on VHS. At present Grechy is converting some videos of Aussie events to DVD (see link mentioned by BEN-HUR above). Maybe we could do a swap.

When I get a spare day, I'm going to do an edit of it, with the time splits which are not on the ABC broadcast, in fact the commentators, in places get confused by the dual km and mile marks, but that my be my Christmas project.

I've got a copy of the 'Sprint', but in the box of Video's I was given last month, was one called 'Rotterdam', I'll check and see what year it was, we maybe in luck.

What we have all got to do, is talk to all 'old runners', about what videos maybe in a box.

2 of the MM videos I have were from guys who were throwing them away because the tape was jammed and wouldn't play.  I fixed the tape jam, and have copied them to DVD.

So any old tape with running is generally saveable, and Grechy, myself and others can convert them to DVD.

I think Jones ran the WR in 1984 (Lopes 2nd, Deek 3rd) and missed Lopes' new WR by 1 sec in 1985 (Deek again 3rd, I think).

I'd love to see any/all of these races. I live in the US - any chance of uploading any of these?

I know it's a long shot, but I don't suppose anyone has Fukuoka 1981? The only image I've seen of Deek's WR is a photo of Deek being interviewed after the race with Gaylene in the background.

- Rotterdam 1983
- Helsinki 1983 - entire race
- Chicago 1984
- Boston 1986

I have prominent Brisbane running acquaintance who has a considerable stash of old videos who may offer some more.

Happy to get these to you if you want to convert to DVD, Digger. I'm another who's happy to pay for a DVD of Brisbane 1982.

Just get all the video's to me, and I'll convert them.

I'm not in the business of selling DVD's, but the owner and Grechy will get a DVD copy.(plus about everybody else who asks)

Ideally, I also want to keep the VCR, because if others have the need, I can then make more copy's.(its pointless nowadays people keeping VCR's who can't convert them.)

I just finished watching Deek's 1982 win again. I still get goosebumps. That performance would still rate as, pacewise, the best judged marathon win by a pre-race favourite in history. I just cannot think of any other which even comes close to matching it.

Yep! agreed about pacewise and i often think of exactly that race in that context. Long before cool running and any running in fact, it was this event and Deek's performance that made me want to run a marathon - only took 24 years to do it  

When asked for the most memorable sporting event, Deek's '82 marathon has always been been my answer (Kerryn McCann's win not far behind either! and Keiran Perkin's '96 1500m win also up there and i'm no swimmer). I was doing a milk run for pocket money in my last year of high school, around St Lucia and Indooroopilly, and bike riding to mates around the Corso at Yeronga, South Brisbane, Toowong etc ... seeing him make a move through those suburbs and on Coro Dr, it was just unbelievable.

Digger, will send you an email... also would LOVE to get a copy of this and obviously with the above emotional outpouring, i would obviously pay for it

Just sent Digger an e-mail, so if the e-mail address posted earlier in this thread is inactive, let me know.  Always on the lookout for new races to watch.  As someone said a few posts earlier, I enjoy watching marathons almost as much as running them.  If someone wants to share some dvds, let me know.  I'm especially interested in Australian events (Melbourne Marathon, Gold Coast, Comrades, City to Surf, etc.).
