Got my Optus magazine yesterday and saw that on ESPN 21 April there is a full and live coverage of this years Boston Marathon!!! 1:55 am till 5:00 am.

Hopefully there will be more big city marathon coverage here in the future...

I just thought of a great idea! What about watching the marathon on TV while running on the treadmill. It would be the cheapest way to run the Boston Marathon and you can finish the marathon at the same time as the winner!  :)

Very good idea Richard99, also don't need to reach the tough qualifying standard just to run the real Boston marathon!!!

Great idea!  However, to engineer a reasonably accurate simualtion of the Boston experience you'll need to sort out a few details:

1. Boston is a point to point course with a significant drop in height.  You'll need to use a treadmill that allows you to run both uphill and downhill.  Run mainly downhill for the first 25km, then uphill for the next 10km, then flat for the last few km.

2. Boston has a huge field of over 17,000 runners - you are never alone.  Get a few other runners to join you on your treadmill.

3. Boston has incredible crowd support over its entire 42kms - it is hardly a serene run.  Get your family and friends to cram themselves into your exercise room and cheer you continuously until you finish.

More seriously, Boston is an wonderful race - impeccable organisation, amazing crowd support, unbeatable tradition and magical atmosphere.

I ran the race last year and got carried away with the downhills, going through halfway in a shade over 1.20, four minutes faster than my game plan.  I paid dearly for my impatience, slowing drastically after 35km.  (Finished in 2.51)

Despite the painful last few kms, I enjoyed every minute of the race.  I was also blown away by the the incredible pre-race exhibition - literally hundreds exibitors, legendary marathon runners like Grete Waitz, Bill Roger and Kannouchi (the current WR holder)on hand to dispense autographs and advice, etc.

Marathon running is alive and well in the USA!
