Hi all,

I'm after a pair of decent trail running shoes - probably Salomon XT or XA, but as is always the case, I'm struggling to find them in my size.

Looking at the Salomon website, they make them up to size 13.5, which is what I'm after, but you can't buy them straight from the site, or seemingly even contact them.

Do any large-footed-coolrunners have tips on where to find/order large shoes?

Sorry, it’s actually UK 13.5 – so that’s US 14.

Brands – my first choice would be Salomon, but I’m open to suggestions.

I run in these, a pair of Adistar Trails, and a pair of old Montrails all size 13 US.
I used to run in Salomon XA Pro 3Ds.

Ideally I run in size 15s, 4E width. For road running I usually wear the Asics 1100 family of shoes.

Asics and Montrail both make trail shoes in 15 and a fairly wide fit (haven't found a dedicated 15, 4E trail shoe yet) and I have used both in long races- Asics Trabuco and Eagle Trail (now discontinued) and the Montrail Streak. Merrell and Vasque also go to 15 in a narrower fit.

The failure of Salomon, Inov, Golite etc to properly accomodate larger feet is pretty poor stuff really, although Salomon used to make a shoe called the Extempo which did go 15, then was, of course, discontinued....

Vasque go up to US15. I've got two pairs of 14s.

They're pretty good. TNF was originally a technical company, making only hard-core mountaineering gear like goretex jackets (I still have my 14 year old mountain jacket which is bombproof). Over the years it diversified a lot, including getting into shoes, but most of their gear is still quite good.

The TNF shop on Elizabeth street is pretty good, and there is a young guy upstairs with dark hair that's into winter stuff who is very helpful.
The Adidas shop on Bourke St mall also has trail runners and may be worth looking at, though they were a bit short of stock last time I looked for adistar trails.

Yeah – about 10 years ago I worked in an outdoor gear store in London (Covent Garden - bit of an outdoor gear shop heaven) – they only used to stock a handful of TNF gear – as you say, mostly technical stuff. I see the store I used to work for has since closed down, but TNF have opened up their own flagship-type TNF mecca in the same street...

Just a quick update.

As it turns out my local Anaconda had 3 types of North Face that I was after - the Rucky Chucky, Hedgehog and Ultra.

I orderd a pair of TNF Ultra 104 GTX XCR in size 14. Now to see if they fit.

I'm still after a second pair, so I might still try to see if I can snare a pair of Salomon now that I'm not in a rush for the second.

Just curious...Why's that? I thought the RC was the most appealing of the lot but last/size wasn't great for my foot unfortunately. One of the very very few TNF products I even considered spending $$$ on.

In total honesty – a pretty stupid reason - the bright red. They would look ok on somebody with size 9’s, but I struggle to get past the idea of wearing big bright red size 14’s – I’m not sure I want the attention they will bring to me. Part of me likes the idea of them, part of me isn’t game.

I have to admit though, the RC felt pretty good. If I find that the Ultra don’t fit too well when they arrive, I might fall back on the RC...
