Hi Folks

After a year on my existing shoes its time for a new pair!

Hoping to get some help or guidance from the forum on my next pair..

I saw Caleb a year back who commented that i was a mild pronator with an interesting foot strike in that it is almost neutral.
My current pair of shoes are Nike Zoom Structure Triax 11 (bought from RunningScience). These were my first proper running shoes so have nothing else to compare them against.. They seem fine with the exception of blisters coming up now and again.

Any recommendations on what should be my next shoe?

Would love to try out brooks or Asics..

Thanks in advance

Hey there,

The Brooks model which is most similar to the Nike Structure Triax would be the Adrenaline, Trance, Infiniti or the new Ravenna (due out in June!) - these are listed in order of most supportive, to least.

However, if you are a neutral foot, you may not require the support these shoes offer (the grey, harder material through the arch of your foot), so you may also like to consider Defyance or Glycerin.

Please only take my advice as a guide - it is hard to suggest something without seeing your feet! Your podiatrist and running store will be able to provide you with a proper assessment.

Please let me know if I can help with information on our shoes.

Run happy!

I also run in the Triax but have bought New Balance 1223's to try. they seem good so far but are a superceded model. The toebox is bigger then the Nike so my toes don't rub. Also try NB 1224, NB769, Asics Kayano and 2140, Brooks Trance and Infinity (Adrenalines I think will be too much support if the Triax is right-try them on though as they are a great shoe), Adidas Supernova Control, Saucony Hurricane and Omni and maybe even the Nike Equalon 3 which is a similar feel to the Triax but a little more room in the toes and a little more support. Also try support shoes from Mizuno-I can't think of the models off the top of my head.
Good Luck

Another option might be the Brooks Axiom- lighter weight racer-trainer for mild pronation.
I like it!

I have very flat feet and pronate and was told by footlocker and amart that I needed brooks beasts. But I went to InTraining in Brissie and had a fit with them. As bad as my feet looked when I ran I had a fairly controlled gait and ended up in Asics 2130's. Loved them so far. The 2140 is the current model.

I used to run in Structure Triax and have switched to Nike Equalon and Asics 3000.

Time for me to jump into this thread...

I also have flat feet :-( As in slabs... no arch to to speak of. I'm currently running in brooks (can't remember the brand name, *will* reply with the model shortly). Purchased 3 years ago (however unsed for most of the time) at Athlete's Foot... They are of the type for medium/high pronators. However i'm finding that after running in them for six weeks they are just not cutting it... :-( I'm now getting the typical old pain i used to get in my ankles before i work orthoics.. it's bloody killing me to be honest :-(

Note: I wear orthotics in my work shoes, alas no joy with getting them to fit in my brooks. I just can't ignore the issue anymore.

I've left a message for my pod. to call me! Having read this thread and other's about orthotics. I've asked him to recommend me a list of shoes that will fit my current orthotics, alternatively a shoe whereby i don't need them (highly unlikely i guess).

WOOT, you have your orthotics in the Triax ???

cheers guys/girls.

thanks for all the replies everyone..

i ducked into Pauls warehouse last night and they had a buy one get one free deal.. so figured id try out the Brooks Trance and Asics Kayano 13's (couldnt get the 15's)..

Took a run in the 13's this morning.. Not sure if its just me but they are a stiff shoe! very rigid and supportive.. but im getting impressions they are a touch overly supportive for me.. which might mean the same for the Trance model.
The pod had mentioned not to get an overly supportive shoe - so iam thinking about Switching the Trance model for something else.

Give the Trance a go-they aren't as supportive as the Kayano's. I personally didn't like the Trance but there are alot who do.
Yes I have my orthotics in my triax Bennie. The factory outlet on Smith St has the triax 11 for $130 last Sunday after our run and the Equalon 2 for $160. They also had buy 1 pair get the second 1/2 price-might be worth a trip if you want the triax.

Hey WOOT.... i checked my shoes at home... Believe it or not i'm actually running in the Trance now.. Trance 5 to be exact... On Saturday last week I put my orthotics into them (had to take out the red insert first though.... Did 15 mins of walking, no real problems. Went for a run.. The first 3.0kms were fine... My feet actually felt very comfortable... Then it came :-( I could feel a blister starting to form :-(

I stopped running straight away and sure enough i get home and there's a small/minor hot-spot on my right foot middle and slightly back on the arch (not that i have an arch (remember.. totally flat feet... but imagine there's one! ;-)

I took it easy over the next fews day... I ended up doing a training sessions tuesday night but just with one orthotic in... yes i know an odd thing to do but it worked.

I rang my pod a couple of days ago and he's said, bring me the shoe, the orthotic and he can grind down the height a touch! No charge either! Melbourne Sports Medical Centre.. thanks Chris! :-)

I haven't had a chance to drop them in but will next week... So hopefully this can get sorted out quick!!!

cheers.

I hated the Trance, and if you've been running in the Triax I'd avoid the adrenalines.

It's not just you, I loved the Kayano 13s - ran in 4 pairs of them - but it took time for them to break in (which I've never experienced in other shoes and I know many will say that you shouldn't need to break them in) but it'd take at least 40-50km before the kayanos were really comfortable for me to run in.

Right now I'm running in the Asics DS range, so DS Trainer 13 (the 14s were made slightly heavier, which I don't like) and the DS Racers. The Trainer is a performance trainer with some stability, I really love it.

But I agree with the others, the Nike Equalon , or the Nike Zoom Air Elite (SO comfortable!), or the Asics 2130 are good too if you don't need all the extras the Kayanos have.

ive done about 50kms between the two shoes (its fun having 2 different pairs to choose from!). They are both great shoes.

My mate just bought some Sauconys for $40 on the wkend!! what a bargain!! Tried some of the shoes on and despite not knowing anything about the brand, the shoes felt bloody great!. I will be definitely considering these next time round. $40!! wow!
