Olympic Torch to Tour the Pacific

Olympic Torch to Tour the Pacific

27 September 1997

Oceania will become a part of the path taken by the Olympic Torch in its journey towards Sydney in 2000. Australian Prime Minister, Mr. Howard, officially announced the route at the South Pacific Forum in the Cook Islands last week.

The countries involved in the Oceania Torch Relay are American Samoa, Cook Islands, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Vanuatu and Samoa.

The Olympic flame will leave Olympia in Greece (the home of the ancient Games) in May 2000 and travel for five months, including 100 days in Australia, before the cauldron at Sydney's Olympic Stadium is lit on the night of Friday, September 15.

The final route for the Torch Relay will be decided late next year.
