Support for Olympic torch to travel Kokoda
19 May 1998A National Party Senator is backing a campaign for the Olympic Torch to be carried along the Kokoda track before the Sydney Olympic Games.
The torch will be taken throughout the South Pacific including Papua New Guinea on its way from Athens to Sydney before the Games.
Victorian Senator Julian McGauran says the torch could be relayed along the Kokoda track by the descendants of the so-called "Fuzzy-Wuzzy Angels", who helped Australian troops in World War II. He says so far the Olympic organising committee has rejected the idea, but he is confident that community support could change that.
He says the Olympic flame at Kokoda would be a better show for the world than inflatable kangaroos on bikes.
