1997 Devils Peak Dingo Challenge

September 18, 1997, Quorn, Flinders Ranges, South Australia

Come Run in the Outback!

The Devils Peak Dingo Challenge is unique, and 1997 is the inaugural year! There are four separate events, a 5, 10 km, each for runners and walkers. Runners and walkers of all abilities are welcome to join in the 5 and the10km. We had intended a 25 mountain run as well, but that will come next time!

The events are on Thursday 18th September. Why Thursday do I hear you ask? Because that week is one in which the Northern Areas of our state will be host to Opera in the Outback, and its moving festival of magnificent events. Thursday is Quorn day. Quorn, a little town nestled in the Flinders Ranges 42 km from Port Augusta will be host to a country and western evening in nearby Warren Gorge, our races, numerous local and international cultural events, and will also have the world famous Pichi Richi Railway in operation. The town will close for a great day! And next day events move north past Hawker, and then north again.

Back to the events. The start is 8.00 a.m. at Quorn Railway Station, with the sound of the Pichi Richi train's whistle setting us away. Much of the course will be viewed by passengers on the train, and the waving may make our arms as tired as our legs! We finish at Quorn Area School, where the oval and sheds will be a base for changing, cleaning up and enjoying some welcome sustenance. The events will attract some elite athletes, as well as a large number of fun runners and walkers. We cater for both, and you will enjoy a great event, have the chance to win excellent place prizes ($250 for first, $150 second and $100 third for the 10 km, $200, $100 and $25 for the 5 km), and random draws, take away a commemorative T-shirt that will be a talking point for some time, and enjoy some great country music at discount prices. If you are going to be in the area this will be an event to enter just for the chance to participate and take away a lasting mementos and memories of running and walking with some champions. The inaugural course records wait to be set!

For further information and entry forms contact the SARRC Office, 1 Sturt Street, (P.O. Box 6051 Halifax St), Adelaide South Australia 5000 with a stamped addressed envelope for entry forms, or they are available at sports stores and centres in SA. Or you can email the club at sarrc@box.net.au. Finally, you can enter up there: the SARRC van will be in Quorn from Tuesday evening, and we will take entries up till 30 minutes before the run.
