The 11th annual Kembla Joggers Fitness Five Funrun was held in Wollongong in near perfect conditions on Sunday, 16th April, with entries well up on last year. The event capped off a great week for the KJ's after being announced winners of the Best Overall Performance category in the Athletics Australia Club Awards.
A quality field was in attendence and it looked like the race records held by James Harrison (14.26) and Liz Miller (15.44) for the 5km course would be under threat. In the end 18 year old David Byrne (14.35) from the lower Blue Mountains edged out Sydney's Andrew Connors (14.36) by just one second with a final burst in the last 200m.
James Harrison finished a credible third in 14.45 almost 10 years to the day that he set the race record in the innaugural event. First local was Barry Keem (14.48) who finished in 4th. The depth of the mens field was highlighted by the fact that 6 runners ran sub-15 mins. Previous winner Ben Dubois finished in 15.05 and 7th place.
Former Australian champion and race record holder Liz Miller lead the womens field from start to finish. Her winning time was 15.59, over one minute clear of second placed Belinda Martin (17.07) and Lauren Elms (17.38) in 3rd.
The event raised over $4000 for the proposed Beaton Park Athletics Track Grandstand and Ammenities Facility.
The Kembla Joggers wishes to thank all sponsors including major sponsor Fluor Daniel Alliance and co-sponsors Rebel Sport, WINTV, i98FM, Illawarra Mercury, Graphic Connection and Beaton Park Leisure Centre.
