Ron Clarke expected to take over Gold Coast Marathon
9 March 2000Australian distance running legend Ron Clarke is expected to confirm next week that he will take over the failed Gold Coast Marathon. Olympic heptathlon gold medallist Glynis Nunn-Cearns said Clarke was close to finalising his offer to run Australia's top marathon.
"He's been in negotiations for a good while and we're looking at putting it on in June," said Nunn-Cearns, who represents Clarke on the Gold Coast. "He still has to make the ultimate decision but we're already making up flyers. We're hoping he'll be able to confirm it next week."
Queensland Premier Peter Beattie, who met Gold Coast Marathon officials yesterday, said the State Government would do all it could to help the event continue.
Beattie said he was aware Clarke had expressed an interest in backing the event. "I've arranged for discussions to take place with Ron Clarke and I'm very supportive of what he's doing," he told a news conference. "I believe the Ron Clarke option is a good option and at the appropriate time we'll have something to say about that."
This week administrators of Gold Coast Marathon Week Pty Ltd, Clout and Associates, recommended the liquidation of the company.
