1997 Huon Valley Classic

October 10-11, 1997, D'Entrecasteaux Channel and Huon Valley regions, Southern Tasmania

A road relay race for 7 teams of 7 members

This year's race schedule:
Stage 1 (Oct 10, evening)3km track run7 x 3km racesDomain Athletic Centre, Hobart
Stage 2 (Oct 11, am)53km road relaylegs 5.2 to 11.4 kmSnug to Cygnet
Stage 3 (Oct 11, pm)52km road relaylegs 5.2 to 8.7 kmCygnet to Huonville

Teams are selected on a rotational basis from nominations received, the objective being to have teams as evenly matched as possible (in 1996, the top two teams finished only 30 seconds apart after 10 hours of racing). Each team member will compete three times over the weekend, once on Friday evening in the 3km race, and twice on Saturday (once in the morning stage, and once in the afternoon stage).

Relay legs are fixed distances, with higher ranked athletes running the longer legs, and the shorter legs being run by the lower ranked athletes. In the 1996 race, the 10km times of athletes competing ranged from 29 minutes to around 35 minutes. However, the standard varies from year to year, so athletes whose performances are a little slower should not be deterred from nominating (your entry fee is refunded if you are not selected).
Higher ranked athletes typically run 7.5 - 11km legs in the Snug to Cygnet stage, and 7.5 - 8.5km legs in the Cygnet to Huonville stage (in 1996, 10 Km times for higher ranked athletes ranged from 29 minutes to 33 minutes). The lower ranked athletes will probably be called on to run 3 - 5km in the morning stage, and 5 - 7km in the afternoon stage.

For those unfamiliar with the D'Entrecasteaux Channel and Huon Valley region of southern Tasmania, the roads are almost traffic-free (by mainland standards), and the scenery is spectacular. In a post-race survey conducted after last year's race, all athletes responding voted the Huon Valley Classic as very enjoyable and very well organised.
