Sydney Trailwalker - Organiser's Comments

May 1999
The last "team" to finish was one army guy who had a bung knee from about 50km. He finished at 45.5 hours. Ouch!!

Total of 87 teams started the inaugral Sydney Trailwalker. The Gurkhas finished in 15.12, including 45 minutes of being lost. The second place team - The Berowra Bush Runners - came in just under 19 hours. These guys should have been the top team given that they train long distance on the very trail every weekend. The third place team was a real surprise - three blokes and a GIRL who finished just after the Berowra team!! These are mates of mine and the girl, Jacqui, had never run more than 20km!! Have to take some training tips form her!! The Sydney Striders who were expected to be top runners, came in "un-official" at about 22 hours and in 6th place.

Of the 87 starting teams, a total 67 "teams" finished...ie, a representative of 67 teams finished. Total number of "complete" teams that finished.....22. That's it!! 22!! Based on what we saw at CP 6 [Mt Kuringai], that is a wee bit better than what we estimated. Team members were dropping out right, left and centre!!

General consensus by those that have run both HK and Sydney - the Sydney trail is not as difficult in terms of steep ups and downs but...this trail has lots of smaller ups and downs and the footing is absolutely terrible. As the times show...this course must be slower!!!
