Crake Doubles up to Depose the King
Paul Crake added to his win in the Telstra Tower run up, by winning The Black Mountain Challenge from the bottom car park on Black Mountain Peninsula to the top of Black Mountain, over a distance of 5 kms. Paul also came third in the Sydney Centrepoint Tower Run Up. He defeated Gerard Ryan (The King), who had notched up 5 successive wins (1992 to 1996). Gerard came in second, with Rob Walter third. Rob Walter recently won the North Canberra Two Peaks Challenge breaking the course record by three minutes.
Fiona Jorgensen, has returned to form late this year after suffering from niggling injuries earlier in the year, to win the Black Mountain Challenge. This is another win to add to her North Canberra Two Peaks Race win (breaking the course record by six minutes), and Telstra Tower Run Up wins. She won the Black Mountain Challenge for the sixth successive year in 21:47. Second was Rosemary Longstaff 22.37 (a 5 seconds improvement on 1996), with Christine Forostenko, third female. Christine finished 66th in 1996 in a time of 28.42, she showed a vast improvement this year.
The race was sponsored by Advantage Credit Union, with Breakfast sponsored by Bakers Delight. A slightly changed area for the breakfast attracted the finishers, to a nice shady, traffic free area, where the presentations and barrel draws were held.
