Peculiar situation where Cremer (as much as we all want him to do well) can be given a lane in questionable circumstances after having only run 400m in his heat and bumped off one step by a near accident of someone else. The criteria that is announced in the heats should hold - the officials are so overly pedantic in every other process of running these championships. It would have been more fair to run a straight final!! or at least have a B final. Farrell was successful in saving a tactical error in his heat and did not think again at repeating it here unsuccessfully. Ndururi last! Another tactically superior race by Hanigan. He always gives hinmself a good chance by smart positioning and he has many more gears that he can use it seems in the latter stages of a race. Open Men's 1,500 metres Heat 1: 1. Comments from the track by coach Lee Derby.
If I could have a 'wish list' for future Nationals I would:
1. Ask Athletics Australia to provide a friendly gatekeeper for the few days prior to the Championships. The annual 'disagreement' with interstate athletes who arrive a couple of days before the Champs start and wish to access the track is becoming a little tiring. It seems that even the locals have similar problems. Is he just 'doing his job', or does he really hate athletes?
2. To enable long jumpers who also sprint (and vice versa)have the opportunity to compete in both. For instance, the women's long jump qualifying was 6pm Friday and round 1 of the 100m at 6:40pm. The men's long jump final was 1:25pm Saturday with the 100m semi at 2:15pm. The under 20 men's 100m 1st round and long jump were both at 12:50pm Sunday. I know this will open a can of worms for hurdler/jumpers etc, however, from a personal perspective I have several athletes who would dearly love to have a go at both. To their credit, AA moved the women's 4 x 100m and long jump from 1 hour apart to 1hr 20, which enabled at least one athlete the opportunity to get a run.
3. Reprogram the timetable, so the women's long jump (the third jumps event of the Champs) does not run 45 minutes late, thus negating some of the effects of the warmup while they were hanging around in the call room.
4. I agree about the medals. Ribbons would certainly add to the prestige of a national championships.
5. A little more focus on field events, particularly from a television perspective would improve the overall image of our sport. Even trackside interviews appear to be mainly concentrated on the track eventers.Hope these aren't considered simple complaints (I actually left those out!). All in all I enjoyed the Champs!

Comments from the track by athlete Andrew Pym.
Just thought I would have a whinge about the warm up facilites at Olympic Park as they are a joke. The dog track out the back is not large enough. I tried warming up on the grass across the road but the sprinklers and uneven ground do not exactly inspire confidence.
This was made worse in the Mens and Womens 200m Heats when we did finally hit the track, the 400m hurdles were on the the track around the top bend so no athletes at any stage could practise their bend running.
Also we had been in the Call Room for about half an hour and the hurdles blocked any run throughs of any distance over 20m.
It will be interesting to see if it is the same next year.
