Places to Run – Central Coast, NSW

Central Coast, NSWChanged line 3 from:
Overview
The NSW Central Coast is approximately 1.5hours drive North from Sydney, following the F3 and taking the Gosford turnoff (just after the yellow dinosaur on the hill). An alternate, more scenic route is via the Pacific Highway, but the time taken is considerably longer.
The Central Coast is a popular tourist destination particularly to Sydneysiders as it is easily accessible for short weekend visits and has fantastic beaches and coastal facilities.
The Central Coast incorporates key tourist locations, including Gosford, Wyong, Terrigal, Avoca, The Entrance, Shelley Beach, Toowoon Bay, Woy Woy, Umina, Ettalong, plus many others.
The Central Coast is surrounded by National Parks and scenic waterways, making it a very unique and special place to run with a large variety of scenic options.
These four routes are for runners interested in mainly offroad/trail running. Some runs can be varied in distance to become more or less challenging.
Some Pictures of the 4 runs below
Girrakool to Patonga – 24.5km one way
Level of difficulty: Challenging. Allow 3hour for experienced runners, 4hours intermediate and around 5.5 if you decide to walk a bit.
Terrain: Trail/Fire Trail following the Great North Walk. Varies from dry bush/scrub to rainforest and waterfall to beach.
Drinks/Toilet Stops: Toilet at start and finish. Nothing in between so you need to be self sufficient.
Other Useful Info: Leeches and mosquitoes when wet. Possibility of Snakes during warmer months.
Distance Variation: Can treat as an out and back run, turning around whenever you want to run back to your car. This option then eliminates the need for transport from Patonga back to your car.
Parking: Parking in Girrakool requires payment per car via ticketing machine so take coins with you. The gates are open 9am-5pm so any earlier or later to get your car out and you have to pay a penalty. You will need to organise transport at the finish to return to the start.
Getting There: Take the Gosford turnoff from the F3 and follow the signposts to the Australian Reptile Park. Turn left onto Quarry Road. If the gate is open, follow the road straight ahead, travelling through a tunnel under the F3. The road stops at Girrakool Picnic Area where there is paid parking.
Description: This run follows part of the Great North Walk through Brisbane Water National Park, starting at Girrakool (near Kariong) and finishing at Patonga, a beachside location. Undulating trails and firetrails lends itself to some great views throughout Girrakool, winding down to a gully of rainforest and even a waterfall.
Climbing up through the other side and some open running across large boulders, well signposted with white arrows signifying the trail of the Great North Walk. Across the top of the Park you then head down again and onto a firetrail.
As you approach Patonga, the trail becomes single file again, and quite sandy which is a relief after the running across boulders for a while. Heading down into Patonga and onto the beach, running across the beach to the main street opposite the jetty. Some swimmers at this point would enable you to take some welcome relief in the water to cool those tired muscles.
A picnic area and toilet facilities help cater for the post-run hunger and hydration requirements.
During the run you may get some mobile phone reception however most mobile phone receptions are poor to non existent at Patonga.
Run Directions: Simply follow the Great North Walk arrows until you get to the descent down to the waterfall. Here the path veers to the left. Keep following this path through to the other side and ascend to the top. Follow the white arrows and/or signs to Patonga. At one point there is a lookout and a sign to “Wondabyne”. DON’T GO TO WONDABYNE or you will end up at Wondabyne train station and may have to end you run here, if you are lucky enough to flag the train driver to stop and pick you up. The other option is to run back to the turnoff, which by this stage you probably wouldn’t feel like doing.
One sad feature of the run is the Woy Woy Rubbish Tip carved into (and destroying) the overall picturesque views of this run. But, at least as you run past and see this to your left, you know you are going the right way.
Keep following the signs to Patonga beach. Towards the end of the run there is a main crossing across Patonga Drive. Be CAREFUL crossing here…it seems like a small road to cross but it can be busy with traffic at 70km/h.
The last decent down to Patonga beach is a relaxing one, enjoying the sandy loam underfoot until you hit the sand. It’s then a few hundred metres until the main street where the run ends.
Rumbalara to Katandra and Seymour Pond – Up to 10km
Level of difficulty: Medium
Terrain: Trail/Fire Trail through diverse bush, including rainforest type terrain
Drinks/Toilet Stops: Start/Finish, Rumbalara Reserve has toilet facilities.
Other Useful Info: Leeches and mosquitoes when wet. Snakes during warmer months. Goannas prevalent.
Distance Variation: Yes. There are many small “ring” trails which can be taken to shorten or lengthen this run. It is very difficult to get lost!
Parking: Free. Park at the top of Rumbalara Reserve.
Getting There: From Sydney take the Gosford turnoff from the F3. Drive down through Gosford, drive past Brisbane Water and heading to East Gosford. Turn left just before the pedestrian overpass at East Gosford and follow the brown signs to Rumbalara Reserve. Heading up the hill to Rumbalara via Dolly Avenue, continue past the water tank on the right hand side to the parking area near the toilet facilities and grassed area.
Description: This is a diverse bush run, covering the dry, arid bush at the top of Rumbalara, across the ridge to Katandra then down to the Rainforest type terrain of Seymour Pond.
Run Directions: Run down past the water tank and take the first trail track on the left. Follow this trail/firetrail until you come to a small grassed reserve and information map undercover.
There are two alternatives to Seymour Pond, the first is clockwise via Toomeys Walk then back via Graves Walk. The second is anticlockwise via Graves walk then back up via Toomeys Walk. It is a circular run so not difficult to find your way back up to the top.
On completion of your loop run down to Seymour Pond, return back to Rumbalara Reserve via the same track you ran down. This is called Mouat Walk which will bring you back to the vicinity of the water tank almost to the top of Rumbalara.
Terrigal to Katandra via Ridgeway Road – 24km
Level of difficulty: Challenging
Terrain: Road/Trail. Lots of Hills. Offroad through Katandra offers bush/rainforest type terrain.
Drinks/Toilet Stops:
Drink stop opposite the Ridgeway Road turnoff on Tumbi Umbi Road. It is a tap at the front of a property. Careful of the jumping ants and a good idea to let the tap run for a short time in case of any creepy crawlies.
Drink stop on the corner of Toilet blocks at Paul Oval. Toilets are not open though unless an organised sport is in duration at the oval. The drinking fountain is on the outside of the toilet block, fortunately.
Drink stop (tap) behind fence on the corner of the Entrance Road and Arundel Road where Central Coast Grammar School is located.
Drink stop (tap) at shops on the corner of Serpentine Road and The Entrance Road.
Other Useful Info: Leeches and mosquitoes when wet. Possibility of snakes during the warmer months.
Parking: Free at Terrigal SLSC.
Getting There: From Sydney take the Gosford turnoff on the F3. Follow the road through Gosford until you come to a huge intersection where the road you are on (The Entrance Road) crosses Terrigal Drive. Turn right onto Terrigal Drive and follow this road until you come to Terrigal Beach. Free parking is on the left, alongside the Terrigal Surf Life Saving Club.
Description: This is by far my favourite run as it has got some good quality running in it. A mixture of easy road running, some road undulations, some large hill climbs (the largest 1.2km long) on Ridgeway Road (fondly referred to as “The Rollercoaster”) before hitting the Katandra trails.
Through Katandra also offers a mixture of hill climbs, steps and descents through magnificent bush where we saw two wallabies fighting a couple of weekends ago (scared the pants of us!). Also common to see goannas, so don’t stand around looking like a tree if you can help it. Coming out of Katandra there’s some crosscountry running along fencelines and paddocks to get back to the main roads then heading back to Terrigal via sealed roads.
Run Directions: Starting from Terrigal SLSC Car park, head up Terrigal Drive towards the lagoon. Turn left at the roundabout, onto Ocean View Drive and across the bridge over the lagoon.
About 2 km along turn right onto Wairakei Road, just past Wamberal Lagoon. Turn right onto Matawai Ave, Left onto Bluebell drive and left onto Pitt Road. There are some shops directly in front of you. Run across the shops here. At the front of the shops are some taps.
Continue along The Entrance Road, heading North towards Tumbi Umbi. Turn left onto Tumbi Umbi Road.
Run along Tumbi Umbi Road for about 4km until you see The Ridgeway Road on the left. Be careful on these roads as there is little room in places for both car and runner!
Head up Ridgeway Road. The first climb is about 1200m and you may start to wonder if it ever ends. Continue along Ridgeway Road until you come across a STOP sign. Turn right here. A few hundred metres down this road and you will see the trail entrance to Katandra.
Just when you thought “thank goodness, no more hills” you will come across a bit of climbing at the start of this trail run. Follow “Toomeys Walk” and it will eventually take you down to the Ranger’s Hut at the bottom of Katandra. If you come across an alternative track “Graves Walk” you can follow this and it will lead you to the same place. However, DON’T follow Mouat Walk or you will end up at Rumbalara and increase your run back by about 10km!
Come out onto a sealed road just past the Ranger’s Hut and turn right. Follow the road down to the end. It will seem like a No Through Road, however as you get closer you will see a small path alongside the fenceline of the property in front. Follow this path. You will run through a bit of forest, keeping right when you see a fork in the path. A few minutes later you will come out into an open paddock. Run directly across the paddock where you can climb through a gate and you are at Paul’s Oval. There is a drinking fountain here, alongside the toilet block.
Run across Paul’s oval. On the left is a road called “Wattle Tree Road”. On the right is another path through some bushland. Follow this path which leads you to the bottom of Arundel Road. Run up to the top of Arundel Road. On the right is a small fence and a green box. Alongside is a tap if you need a drink.
Turn left at the intersection of Arundel and The Entrance Road. Run along The Entrance Road until you come to a small roundabout, and some shops at the intersection of Serpentine Road. There is a tap at these shops too. Turn right onto Serpentine Road and follow the road all the way back to Terrigal Drive. Turn left at Terrigal Drive and follow this road all the way back to the SLSC carpark at Terrigal.
Bouddi National Park – 16km return
Level of difficulty: Very Challenging
Terrain: sand trail/steps/trail/beach
Drinks/Toilet Stops: Putty Beach camping grounds
Other Useful Info: Mosquitoes when wet. Possibility of snakes during warmer months. Saw a red-bellied black snake in a rock crevice at Maitland Beach.
Parking: Free at Copacabana SLSC
Getting There: From Sydney take the Gosford turnoff on the F3. Follow the main road which becomes The Entrance Road. Turn Right at Avoca Drive. Follow this road to the end, where you meet with a roundabout and Kincumber Public School on the left.
Turn right where the road is still Avoca Drive (the left is Scenic Highway) and continue about 400m to another roundabout. At this roundabout turn left onto The Scenic Road and straight ahead onto Cullens Road at the next roundabout. Follow the signs to Copacabana, about a further 5 minutes drive away. Park on the left in the public carpark, opposite the Surf Life Saving Club. There is also free parking opposite the shops to the right.
Description: This is a very challenging run. I have heard one person describe two laps of this run as being far more difficult than the 45km 6Foot Track Marathon. You can decide for yourself. There are lots of steps, some narrow and short spaced, others wide and long spaced. It is undulating trail which sometimes widens to firetrail for a short while.
The run takes you across a few beaches, starting with Copacabana, McMasters?, Little Beach, Maitland Beach and Putty Beach. The turnaround is at Putty Beach. For those requiring a less challenging run the return can be done via the Scenic Road back to McMasters? Beach then along the beach back to Copacabana Beach.
Run Directions: On Copacabana beach, start running to your right. Run along to McMasters? Beach and follow the steps and concrete path up to McMaster? Parade. Turn left and follow this road to the end. It is a no through road with a track leading straight into Bouddi National Park at the end of the cul-de-sac.
Follow the trail signs to Little Beach. Once at Little Beach (which you don’t actually run along, but instead go across a wooden platform and look down upon Little Beach), wind your way up steps and follow the signs to Maitland Bay. There are small, steep steps straight down to Maitland Beach. Run across to the other side and latch onto the trail again.
At the intersection, there is Maitland Bay Track on the right (leading up to The Scenic Road). If you have had enough you can take this track and turn right onto The Scenic Road to head back to McMasters? Beach. Otherwise, take the left track, which leads to Putty Beach. Putty Beach is the turnaround point for this run. You then return via the way you came, or if you want an easier run, head through the carpark and up to The Scenic Road and turn right for a 10km (approximately) run back to McMasters?.
Cautionary Note: If you decide to take The Scenic Road back to McMasters? Beach be careful of traffic. There are no footpaths on the roadside and some bends have little room to share the road with traffic.

""Places to Run – Central Coast, NSW""
""Overview""
""Girrakool to Patonga – 24.5km one way""
"Level of difficulty:" Challenging. Allow 3hour for experienced runners, 4hours intermediate and around 5.5 if you decide to walk a bit.
"Terrain:" Trail/Fire Trail following the Great North Walk. Varies from dry bush/scrub to rainforest and waterfall to beach.
"Drinks/Toilet Stops:" Toilet at start and finish. Nothing in between so you need to be self sufficient.
"Other Useful Info:" Leeches and mosquitoes when wet. Possibility of Snakes during warmer months.
"Distance Variation:" Can treat as an out and back run, turning around whenever you want to run back to your car. This option then eliminates the need for transport from Patonga back to your car.
"Parking:" Parking in Girrakool requires payment per car via ticketing machine so take coins with you. The gates are open 9am-5pm so any earlier or later to get your car out and you have to pay a penalty. You will need to organise transport at the finish to return to the start.
"Getting There:" Take the Gosford turnoff from the F3 and follow the signposts to the Australian Reptile Park. Turn left onto Quarry Road. If the gate is open, follow the road straight ahead, travelling through a tunnel under the F3. The road stops at Girrakool Picnic Area where there is paid parking.
"Description:" This run follows part of the Great North Walk through Brisbane Water National Park, starting at Girrakool (near Kariong) and finishing at Patonga, a beachside location.
"Run Directions:" Simply follow the Great North Walk arrows until you get to the descent down to the waterfall.
""Rumbalara to Katandra and Seymour Pond – Up to 10km""
"Level of difficulty:" Medium
"Terrain:" Trail/Fire Trail through diverse bush, including rainforest type terrain
"Drinks/Toilet Stops:" Start/Finish, Rumbalara Reserve has toilet facilities.
"Other Useful Info:" Leeches and mosquitoes when wet. Snakes during warmer months. Goannas prevalent.
"Distance Variation:" Yes. There are many small “ring” trails which can be taken to shorten or lengthen this run. It is very difficult to get lost!
"Parking:" Free. Park at the top of Rumbalara Reserve.
"Getting There:" From Sydney take the Gosford turnoff from the F3.
"Description:" This is a diverse bush run, covering the dry, arid bush at the top of Rumbalara, across the ridge to Katandra then down to the Rainforest type terrain of Seymour Pond.
"Run Directions:" Run down past the water tank and take the first trail track on the left.
""Terrigal to Katandra via Ridgeway Road – 24km""
"Level of difficulty:" Challenging
"Terrain:" Road/Trail. Lots of Hills. Offroad through Katandra offers bush/rainforest type terrain.
"Drinks/Toilet Stops:"
"Other Useful Info:" Leeches and mosquitoes when wet. Possibility of snakes during the warmer months.
"Parking:" Free at Terrigal SLSC.
"Getting There:" From Sydney take the Gosford turnoff on the F3.
"Description:" This is by far my favourite run as it has got some good quality running in it.
"Run Directions:" Starting from Terrigal SLSC Car park, head up Terrigal Drive towards the lagoon.
""Bouddi National Park – 16km return""
"Level of difficulty:" Very Challenging
"Terrain:" sand trail/steps/trail/beach
"Drinks/Toilet Stops:" Putty Beach camping grounds
"Other Useful Info:" Mosquitoes when wet. Possibility of snakes during warmer months. Saw a red-bellied black snake in a rock crevice at Maitland Beach.
"Parking:" Free at Copacabana SLSC
"Getting There:" From Sydney take the Gosford turnoff on the F3. Follow the main road which becomes The Entrance Road. Turn Right at Avoca Drive. Follow this road to the end, where you a met with a roundabout and Kincumber Public School on the left.
"Description:" This is a very challenging run.
"Run Directions:" On Copacabana beach, start running to your right.
If you have had enough you can tack this track and turn right onto The Scenic Road to head back to McMasters? Beach. Otherwise, take the left track, which leads to Putty Beach. Return via the way you came, or if you want an easier run, head through the carpark and up to The Scenic Road and turn right for a 10km (approximately) run back to McMasters?.
"""Cautionary Note: If you decide to take The Scenic Road back to McMasters? Beach be careful of traffic. There are no footpaths on the roadside and some bends have little room to share the road with traffic."""
