Overview

For clarity and ease of use the Australian Running Guide has been built upon a locality hierarchy - it's the Australian Guide and so it makes sense that the first categories are by State.

Each State then focuses on the capital city and the major regions/cities - Locations, within the State. In the case of the larger capital cities they too are broken down further by regional Location. As the Australian Running Guide is organic, and expected to grow, as more information comes to hand, additional Locations can be added, merged or separated as required.

For each State Location (city/region) a summary for that Location is provided covering a number of key issues likely to be of interest to runners. Issues such as...

  • The Basics - an overview of the location.
  • Key Races - held in this location and when.
  • Running Tracks - Tracks available for public use in this location.
  • Places to Run - more of that in a moment
  • Running Clubs
  • Places to Buy Running Gear incl Shoes.
  • Medical & Doctors
  • Cool Runners Register - a list of Cool Runners living at this location who might want to meet up for a run.

The major City Locations, due to their size, incorporate an extra level of summarisation. The Places to Run and Cool Runner's Register have been included on Regional Summary Information page. This will allow for runs to be summarised by region and keep the City page relatively uncluttered. It may be necessary to record your name in the Runner's Register on multiple summary pages.

The Cool Running community can add or update any of these details by following the steps contained in the instructions on the FAQ link in the Running Guide sidebar menu.

Given that there will hopefully be a number of Places to Run logged by Cool Running members the Places to Run is again subject to another level with each run having a page of it's own with a standard suite of details provided as a guide for those wishing to add their favourite run. The run details will cover...

  • Run Name
  • Run Summary
  • Run Distance
  • Topography
  • Water Stations
  • Facilities
  • Run Route Details
  • Map Reference

Cool Running members are encouraged to add new runs to the site using the instructions on the FAQ link in the Running Guide sidebar menu. Initially new Locations (city/region) may needed to be added, as time goes by places to run will fit within the existing structure and simply new runs added to existing Locations.

Making Changes

Cool Running Australia registered users can and are encouraged to make contributions to the Australian Running Guide. As you navigate through the guide the frame including sidebar menus will remain unchanged. The sidebar menus are the two groups at the left of this window headed This Page and & Running Guide. On any page you are able to add or modify the content of that page by clicking on the Edit Page link in the This Page sidebar menu. As has been stated on the home page - whilst mistakes will occur - you can do no permanent harm to the Guide.

For help with editing and formatting visit the Text Formatting Rules page.

In summary to add/modify any page...
  • Navigate to page of interest.
  • Use the Edit Page link.
  • Make changes in the edit page window that opens
  • Click on the 'Save' button at the botom of the edit page - Use the 'Cancel' button if you get in a mess.
  • Review your changes once returned to the page of interest.
  • If you spot a mistake - simply edit again.

Templates

To keep a degree of uniformity in the information a number of templates have been created to help with your data entry when entering a new Location or Place to Run. The templates are available from the Templates Page. They have been designed for "cut and paste" use and contain both instructions for use and sample input items. Should you require detailed assistance with the use of the templates then visit the DetailedHowToGuides page.

Help

There's plenty of help available in both technical and very non-technical terms. As a first point of reference have a look at the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page and if it's not there then you can always Leave a Message and one of the administrators will get back to you.

Contact the Administrators

The Australian Running Guide has been purposefully built utilising software that the user community can utilise without a technical background. However if, after reading all of the help information, you can not come to grips with the software and need some assistance with any task then simply Leave a Message and one of the administrators will get back to you.

Future Features

The Australian Running Guide is an evolving project - so many ideas, so little time. The FeatureSuggestions page lists some of those good ideas, some of which may be incorporated into the Guide in the future. Because this is your Guide please feel free to add your suggestions to the page by following the links.

Getting Started at the Australian Running Guide

Please note we will sometimes refer to the Australian Running Guide as the "ARG" for ease of use.

'''this was the Structure Overview - please remove this note

For the sake of clarity and ease of use the ARG site has been built upon a locality hierarchy. It's the Australian Guide and as such the first analysis is by state.

Each state then focuses on the capital city and the major regions/cities - locations, within the state. In the case of the larger capital cities they too are broken down by locale.

For each state location (city/region) a summary for that location is provided covering a number of key issues likely to be of interest to runners. Issues such as...

  • Places to Run - more of that in a moment
  • Running Tracks
  • Running Clubs

The Cool Running community can add or update any of these details by following the steps contained in the instructions on the home page [[link]].

Given that there will hopefully be a number of places to run logged by Cool Running members the Places to Run is again subject to another level with each run having a page of it's own with a standard suite of details provided as a guide for those wishing to add their favourite run.

Cool Running members are encouraged to add new runs to the site using the instructions on the home page [link]. Initially new locations (city/region) may needed to be added, as time goes by places to run will fit within the existing structure and simply new runs added to existing locations. Instructions for creating new places are also contained on the home page [link].
