For the continuing success of this run, it is important to note that the 2004 run was a Fat Ass run and not a race, despite some reports that suggest otherwise. The trail crosses a number of busy roads making anything other than a Fat Ass run too dangerous.

2004 saw the inaugural staging of the Bellarine Rail Trail Run that was run in traditional Fat Ass style. The run was conceived by Phil Essam, the well known ultra enthusiast. Details of the 2004 run can be found here.

Phil moved to Canberra in the following year and handed over the reins to Brett Coleman.
