adidas Sundown Marathon 2009 breaks previous turnout record
Record number of participants have registered for event – introduction of Women’s 10KM category a welcome addition to night race
SINGAPORE – 04 March 2009 – The adidas Sundown Marathon (www.sundownmarathon.com), Asia’s only mass night running event, has surpassed the record turnout set at last year’s inaugural race. As of 3 March 2009, more than 10,000 men and women have signed up for “Singapore’s Toughest Race”. This total breaks the event’s previous entry record of 6,088 participants.
With just under a month left to register, a total marathon field of over 5,500 is expected by race day on Saturday, May 30. While the Sundown Marathon’s companion race, the Sundown Ultramarathon, is nearing the 280 participant mark and is on pace to shatter the record field of 322 participants set last year.
“Although still a relatively new race, the adidas Sundown Marathon is well on its way to becoming a world class event . We are happy to receive the continous support from adidas for the second edition of the race. The overwhelming response to this year’s event has been fantastic from participants both at home and from across the region," said Benjamin Wee, General Manager, HiVelocity Pte Ltd.
“Early registration data indicates that last year’s runners have returned, with many having stepped up their training programmes over the course of the year, encouraging entry level runners to attempt a Marathon or even an Ultramarathon in some cases.”
This year’s route travels through some of east’s most beautiful urban parks as well as major local landmarks such as Bedok Reservoir, East Coast Park and the Changi Ferry Terminal; all set to the backdrop of Singapore’s night sky.
A new addition to the event is also the introduction of the Women’s 10KM which has garnered remarkable response from the public. A total field of over 2,200 is expected for the Women’s 10KM.
"The past few years have seen a surge in women doing sports, especially in the participation of running events,” said Lee Phui Fong, Country Manager of adidas Singapore. “The introduction of a new female-specific 10KM category to this race further reinforces our commitment to both Women, as well as Running in Singapore.”
The adidas Sundown Ultramarathon will be held on Saturday 30 May beginning at 1900hrs at Changi Point. The team category begins at 2000hrs followed by the Women’s 10KM at 2030hrs and the Marathon at 2359hrs.
