Bunch of Fives Race 3, Woolgoolga 4/12/08
BUNCH OF FIVES 5,000 METRES SERIES, RACE THREE, THE BEACH,
Wade O’Malley made his first appearance in this season’s Bunch of Fives Series a spectacular one with an all-the-way win on the beach at Woolgoolga. O’Malley went straight to the front from the start to set a cracking pace across the firm sand and record 17.41 for the 5,000 metres.
He was pursued valiantly by Series leader Warren Turner and two ‘young guns’ James Franklin and Nathan Dyson all of whom finished under 20minutes.
Tenielle Stubbs made it three wins from three starts this season with her victory in the ladies’ race. She completed the two laps between the boat ramp and the Lake in 21.04 giving her a margin of more than two minutes over runner-up Tina Thompson and third-placed Lyn Fulton. The thirty starters had to battle a strong headwind on the return leg of each lap which affected times as most of the runners found themselves isolated with only a couple able to enjoy a bit of drafting.
The Series pointscore sees Turner move a further point ahead of Franklin with two rounds to go while Stubbs has established a convincing lead over her rivals for the ladies’ crown. The next round will be the Cross Country which will start at 6.00p.m. on Thursday, 15th January from the bus bays near Woolgoolga High School.
