Gold Coast Airport extends Marathon sponsorship for three years The Gold Coast Airport renewal of its naming rights sponsorship of the annual Gold Coast Marathon for a further three years was today welcomed by Premier Anna Bligh.

“The renewal will see the Gold Coast Airport continue as naming rights sponsor of the internationally acclaimed Gold Coast Airport Marathon in 2009, 2010 and 2011,” said Ms Bligh.

“The Gold Coast Airport first signed on as naming rights sponsor for the 2003 Marathon and the new deal will take its sponsorship of the event through to a ninth year in 2011.”

“The Gold Coast Airport has made a significant investment in this major Queensland event and in major City infrastructure on the Gold Coast in recent years.”

“Not only do I welcome this decision by the Gold Coast Airport, but I thank them for their commitment to an event that I personally have a soft spot for.”

Since the Gold Coast Airport commenced its sponsorship at the 2003 event, entries have risen dramatically, with this year’s event recording a more than 25% increase in participant numbers over last year’s marathon event.

The Premier said the relationship has been an excellent example of an event and sponsor sharing a similar goal and objective of bringing more visitors to the Gold Coast.

“The sponsorship by Gold Coast Airport has enabled the event to reach key international markets with routes opening up to and from Asia and New Zealand,” said Ms Bligh.

“The relationship between Gold Coast Airport and the Marathon also generated a historic moment for the Airport last year. The first international flight to land on the new Gold Coast Airport runway extension brought more than 220 visitors from Japan for the Marathon.”

This year, two international QANTAS flights will be re-routed into Gold Coast Airport to bring Japanese runners to the event.

Gold Coast Airport Chief Operating Officer Paul Donovan said the Gold Coast Airport is very proud to have been associated with the Gold Coast Airport Marathon over the past five years and looks forward to a mutually successful involvement, with the renewal of the sponsorship until 2011.

“Our organisations have enjoyed rapid growth since our first year as naming rights sponsor and we continue to share our main goals – to grow tourism to this wonderful destination and set benchmarks in our respective industries that attract worldwide attention,” said Donovan.

“The Gold Coast Airport Marathon allows the Gold Coast Airport to demonstrate to other corporate entities a commitment to foster events that showcase this region to the world and involve the community as a whole.

“We are the gateway to the Gold Coast and Northern Rivers regions and can now provide the marathon and its participants with many more direct flights from key markets – our shared marketing initiatives and ongoing collaborative efforts have been extremely successful prompting further reason to continue our successful relationship with Queensland Events Gold Coast as the naming rights sponsor of the Gold Coast Airport Marathon.”

Gold Coast Airport has fostered active participation in the event by staff and stakeholders and considers this as a reinforcement of a ‘healthy’ workplace generating positive staff morale and a unique team building opportunity.

The Gold Coast Airport Marathon is organised by Queensland Events Gold Coast which is a major event management company wholly owned by the Queensland Government through Queensland Events Corporation. The event is held annually on the first Sunday in July.

Gold Coast is a key component of the portfolio of airports owned by Queensland Airports Limited (GCAL) that also includes the gateways of Townsville and Mount Isa. GCAL is owned and operated by Queensland Airports Limited.
