MACFARLANE RANKED IN WORLD TOP TEN
An outstanding first half of the year has ensured that Tasmanian steeplechaser, Donna MacFarlane, is again amongst the top ten athletes in the World in her event.
In its annual merit based world rankings released today, the authoritative US publication Track and Field News has placed MacFarlane ninth in the discipline for 2008.
The announcement will come as welcome news for the 31 year old who was bitterly disappointed not to make the final of her event in Beijing at the Olympic Games.
Athletics Tasmania President, Brian Roe said that win/loss records throughout the year were always important in the Track and Field News lists, which are widely accepted as being the pre-eminent rankings in the sport.
"Donna's World Athletics Tour victories in Melbourne in February and Doha in May would have placed her in a strong position and these were backed up very soundly by her third placing in Oslo in June which also delivered an Oceania and National record of 9.18.35," Roe said.
"And we should not overlook the fact that on time alone, Donna was number eight in the World for the year."
MacFarlane was also fifth in the WAT Meet in Rieti and seventh in the Tour Final in Stuttgart, whilst se easily retained her Australian title at the National Championships in Brisbane in March.
