MELBOURNE MILE RUN AND WON
John Landy, the first Australian to break the four minute mile, was on hand to watch the hotly contested Aviva Investors Melbourne Mile run today along St Kilda Road.
The 1.6 kilometre race attracted hundreds of participants from school age to veterans. While some of Australia’s elite athletes tackled the mile, none could eclipse the magical four minute barrier.
Battling high spring temperatures and a northerly head wind, the closest to Landy’s famous record in Melbourne in 1956 was 22-year-old Beijing Olympian Jeff Riseley in the men’s elite division in a time of 4:15.41.
“It was a great course today. As it gathers momentum and starts to attract talent from around Australia it will become one of our great road races,” said Riseley.
Having been injured during the Australian 07/08 season, Riseley headed north for the 2008 European summer, where he ran within .2 of his 800m personal best on three separate occasions.
Riseley then found himself on the start list for the Rome Golden League meeting, this time for the 1500m. The result, he knocked 2.53 seconds of his previous time, clocking 3.36.03, the seventh fastest time ever by an Australian over the distance. He was then added to the team for Beijing.
The women’s elite division was won by 23-year-old Beijing Olympian Lisa Corrigan in a time of 4:49.54.
After Corrigan’s breakthrough year in 2007, the 23-year-old has suffered from a recent string of injuries that have seriously restricted her 2008 season.
At the Australian Championships, Corrigan finished fourth in the 1500 metres (4:22.05). This strong result proved she was coming into great form and she was subsequently nominated for her first Olympic team.
John Landy predicted that with better conditions, the 4 minute mark will be broken at next year’s Aviva Investors Melbourne Mile.
