This is a cross-country series in the Sydney Metro area, that has been a staple of the Athletics NSW club scene for some years, so most affiliated athletes get the race details via the West Met Series Handbook (available for $2 at each event). There is no series website, and this page has been put together by keen runners that are keen to encourage others to attend the events.

Briefing

Athletes interested in distance running of all ages and irrespective of club membership are welcome to compete in any of the West Met events. The purpose of the events is to cater for regular competitors who use the competition as part of their training for the NSW Championships or the summer track season. New competitors are welcome and social runners are also encouraged to enjoy the sport. Competitors must be registered with an Athletics NSW affiliated club or a Little Aths NSW Centre in order to be covered for personal accident insurance.

You don't have to be an affiliated club member to run the race the first time, you can officialy run a trial.

Starting Times & Distances

On each afternoon, the first event is the shorter (1.5km-3km) and begins at 2pm. The medium distance event (3km-5km) begins at 2:25pm while the longer distance (7km-12lm) will begin at 3pm. When entering at the start of the season, runners should indicate which division (short, medium, or long) that they wish to score points for. Runners can use the Short event as a warm-up for the medum or long etc (as long as they pay for each event).

Entry Fees

$2 per entrant payable on the afternoon of competition or $20 for the full season of 16 afternoons. $2 per entrant entitles you to compete in all events that day if desired.

Age Divisions

Competition age is the age the runner will be at 31st December 2007 for the purpose of points scoring. Divisions are:

  • Under 10s
  • Under 12s
  • Under 14s
  • Under 16s
  • Under 20s
  • Seniors 20-29
  • Pre-vets 30-39
  • Veterans 40-49
  • Masters 50-59
  • Golden Oldies 60 years+

There is no minimum age, but suspect that kids under 5 years might be too young. There seems to be a few 5 or 6 year olds running.

Point Scores & Awards

To be eligible for awards, competitors must have finished in at least 8 afternoons in the age division. The main objective of the West Met Series is to encourage as large as possible participation, to enjoy winter competition for serious championship aspirants and to encourage track competitors to use the events as conditioning for the summer season. If good fellow and friendship can be formed by this regular competition then the desire achievement will be fulfilled. A competitor may run more than one event on an afternoon but can only nominate only one event to score points from.

Points will be awarded for places based on the actual times in each of the events in the nominated division as follows: 1st=10 points, 2nd=9 points down to 9th= 2 points. All other runners receive 1 point.

Course Ratings

  1. A flat relatively fast course
  2. Flat course with slight rises
  3. Undulating course with slight hills
  4. A hard course with large and steep inclines
