WOOLGOOLGA ATHLETIC CLUB 10,000 METRES TRACK CHAMPIONSHIP, 2009, held at Woolgoolga Sportsground.

On Friday evening the 24th edition of the Woolgoolga Athletic Club’s 10,000 metres track Championship was conducted although the result was a case of back-to-the-future with two of the protagonists from the inaugural race going head to head twenty three years later.

Neil Wood won the inaugural Championship in 1986 using his finishing kick to prevail over his rivals one of whom was Jim Bennington. As it was then so it was again on Friday. Bennington trailed Wood from lap one to lap twenty four, always in contact but unable, finally, to withstand Wood’s last lap surge. The margin at the finish was a mere eight seconds.

Third spot went to Paul Sheringham who ran solo throughout to finish two minutes adrift of the major players.\

Meanwhile Lyn Fulton who has prevailed in the Women’s Championship more often than anyone else was kept close company by the barefoot Ken Crabb. While Crabb was able to finish 3 seconds ahead he had provided the incentive for Fulton to claim yet another title. Second lady nearly two and a half minutes later was Tina Thompson with Janie Mahoney in third some 92 seconds in arears.
