Woolgoolga Bunch of Fives Race 4, 15/1/09
WOOLGOOLGA ATHLETIC CLUB ‘BUNCH OF FIVES’ 5,000 METRES
RACE FOUR, CROSS COUNTRY, WOOLGOOLGA, 15.1.09
The ‘old firm’ of Warren Turner and James Franklin were once again to the fore in the fourth race of the ‘Bunch of Fives’ 5,000 metres Series, making it three 1-2 finishes for the pair in this season’s races. The technical nature of the two laps of the Woolgoolga High School course coupled with the hot conditions meant that fast times were unlikely and so it proved. Nevertheless, Turner and Franklin were pleased to confirm their overall Series rankings with their respective times of 20.30.4 and 20.47.6.
The Pearson family, running on what is virtually home turf, proved the surprise package of the event with Richard securing third spot for the men by outkicking distance running icon Jim Bennington, and Nicole breaking through the ‘Tenielle’ barrier to claim first place for the ladies in 24.01.9. It should be pointed out that Tenielle Stubbs was racing to ‘instructions’ as she had Trans-Tasman Little Athletics the following weekend. Nevertheless she crossed in second place and maintains her lead in the female pointscore.
Third lady was Tina Thompson who finished in the midst of what resembled a peleton of seasoned athletes.
The final race of the Series will take place on the track at Woolgoolga Sportsground on Friday 6th February starting at 6.00pm.
