Outstanding results by Australians in World Long Distance Mountain Running Championship The Australian women’s team has finished second to Russia in the World Long Distance Mountain Running Championship in the Kaisermarathon in Austria on Sunday. In addition every team member achieved an age group placing.

Angela Bateup of Yass in New South Wales followed up her 3rd placing in 2008 to finish 5th in 3:48:35 and first W40. Canberra’s Vanessa Haverd was 7th in 3:49:27 and first W30, just ahead of Albury’s Colleen Middleton, 8th in 3:50:09 and first W45. Fleur Flannery of Yass was 17th in 4:06:51 and 3rd W40, with Melbourne’s Isobel Bespalov 21st in 4:17:49 and 3rd W35. The fastest female was Anna Pichrtova of the Czech Republic in 3:28:57, with Evgeny Danilova of Russia second in 3:29:23 and Anna Frost of New Zealand 3rd in 3:33:21.

In the men’s race Six Foot Track champion Ben Artup of the Blue Mountains finished 14th in 3:26:32 and 3rd M35. Mark Lauenstein of Switzerland surprisingly defeated multiple world champion Jonathon Wyatt of New Zealand to win the world title in 3:06:20, with Wyatt next in 3:12:05 and Ricky Lightfoot of Great Britain 3rd in 3:14:05.
