The Sydney Marathon
The following is a brief run down of some of the previous years runnings of the Sydney Marathon.| 2002 | See Main Sydney Marathon Page |

| 2000 | The race was held in 2000 - with the Sydney Olympics fast approaching, it was decided to have a public "Olympic Trial" (named the Host City Marathon). This was organised by the Sydney Olympic Organising Committee (SOCOG) instead of Athletics NSW, with Canberra-Marathon Director Dave Cundy at the helm as Race Director. It was held in April 2000 with over 5000 runners and was considered by all to be a great success.
|
| 1999 | The race was not held in 1999 as News Corporation cancelled their four year sponsorship after the 1998 event. The 1999 event was announced and planned for but cancelled at virutally the last minute, Athletics NSW claiming lack of sponsor. Apparently they were seeking $1 million in sponsorship, and would not put on a cheaper event when the money was not forthcoming. |
| 1998 | The race was held in 1998, as a result of sponsorship by the Sunday Telegraph newspaper. It was meant to be a 4-year deal, but only lasted for one year. Many runners were disappointed that the start was delayed by one hour at short notice due to road/police issues.
|
| 1997 | The race was not held in 1997 due to a number of difficulties with the administration of the race, mainly due to no suitable sponsor being found in time. There was a lot of media discussion on the progress of various issues, most of which were tracked by CoolRunning.
|
| 1994-1996 | Between these years, the event was managed by Athletics NSW and held over more or less (but not THE same) North Sydney to Homebush as the Olympics 2000 course would later follow (allowing for roadworks due to the Olympic building program).
|
| 1991-1993 | As there was no "Sydney Marathon", the NSW state titles were held interstate, at the very sucessful Canberra Marathon. |
| Late 1980s-1990 | By the end of the 1980s, the event had been held over the Anzac Day holiday weekend (April 25th) and the last running of this event was 1990, leaving no marathon with the title "Sydney Marathon". |
| 1980+ | In the early days of the running boom, the event was known as the WANG Sydney Marathon, and went generally from Manly to the City, although the event changed course AND sponsors frequently. |
