Queenslander breaks record for longest continuous run

Queenslander breaks record for longest continuous run

16 December 1999

Ultra distance runner Gary Parsons has broken the world record for the longest continuous run.

Parsons, from Queensland, started the attempt on Anzac Day, and has run anti-clockwise around Australia to raise money for Legacy.

An emotional Parsons jogged into the centre of Hobart this afternoon, beating the previous mark of 17,071 kilometres by a couple of kilometres.

The previous record had been set by American Robert Sweetgall in 1983.

Parsons says he will keep going to make the record hard to beat.

"I want to make it hard for the next guy, or lady, or whoever it may be," he said. "And if I can make the 20,000 then great, but I do have another life. But I'll make it quite a big gap, so they'll just look at it and shake their heads."
