Only two runners entered the 1998 Trans-Australia event -- Riley and Texas runner Don Winkley -- and only Riley finished. In 2000, he expects to have about 25 entrants, mostly from Australia. Riley says his uncle, Pat Riley from Little Rock, Arkansas, is willing to put up $20,000 US to get the next race going. This should be enough money to attract other sponsors, particularly in Australia, and to draw some media interest, he expects. One Australia runner who has shown a lot of interest is Pat Farmer. "Pat would like to see a more professional and higher profile race," Riley said. "I will do everything in my power to make him one of the major people involved, either as a participant or on some important organizational capacity." Riley said he believes he is more likely to be successful in organizing a Trans-Australia race than another Trans-America race. "The roads are too busy in the United States, and it's now as expensive in Australia. It's day and night, the difference. . . . My uncle feels like it could be a business success."
