Ocean Breeze

23rd Stage - Highway stop to Highway stop 62.4km, 28th Jan 2001

In pitch black, the runners get out of bed to start running at 5.00am. It was the last stage with the Southern Ocean clear on right hand side with the tail wide helping them to run across the Nullarbor Plain.

Dusan Mravlje from Slovenia had a fast start and was leading the pack of runners for the first 10km when the race leaders Anatoliy Kruglikov and Andrei Derxen from Russia over powered him. Once again they were too strong for any one else to catch them and when Derxen took a water break at 14 km, Kruglikov launched himself for a fast break and built apon a three minute lead. Today Kruglikov did not slow his pace and constantly built his lead all the way to the finish line beating Derxen by 25 minutes and 10 seconds.

Kaname Sakurai from Japan came in third place after a very good run and he was really happy because he was infront of Dusan Mravlje as he has been after finishing behind him for the last 5 stages. While Francis, Schwerk, Jermolajevs and Smith were running up to their expectations, Mihaly Molnar was still not the all smiling Hungarian runner from the beginning of the race. He is still suffering from injuries which has lead to his pace being slower than he expected. Another runner with injury problems is Australian Paul Every who was more pleased with a kiss from his partner Diana after the race than his running.

The oldest two runner of the competion George Audley and Helmut Schieke are still in a great mood and are running comfortably, finishing with no problems together with Markus Muller. Tomorrows stage will be another short one finishing at the Nullarbor roadhouse after completing 52km.
