Sakurai shadows Molnar

Sakurai shadows Molnar

24th Stage - Highway stop to Nullabor Roadhouse 52.2km, 29th Jan 2001

The windy night (which most of runners spent in tents and trailers close to the sea) marked also the first few kilometres of today’s stage. The leading four in overall results and Lithuanian Jermolajevs started running faster than others. They have been running first ten kilometres together and every one of them has been ahead for some time. The first one to lose strength was Jermolajevs and after the third stop for drink Mravlje lagged behind, too.

Kruglikov and Derxen have been running along Japanese Sakurai, but he soon couldn’t follow the tempo of the other two. Further process of the stage has been the same as in last days. Kruglikov has been running towards new victory and Derxen to the second position. Sakurai and Mrevlje have changed the third ad fourth position in the last two stages. Francis caught Jermolajevs ten kilometres before the finish and than overtook him easily.

German Schwerk, who overtook English Brown in overall results yesterday, was faster today again. Brown likes to drink red wine after every stage. "We have bought 40 litres in Perth, but that wasn’t enough even till the beginning of Nullabor, since my attendants enjoyed the glass after every lunch, too," said Bobby yesterday afternoon, when he spent most of his time lying in the shadow of old street plough.

Today’s short stage enabled every competitor to rest before noon in room or tent in the camp behind the gas station in Nullabor. There will be harder stages in next days that will probably cause the change on the third position. Molnar probably won’t be able to defend himself before Sakurai and Mrevlje shadows him, too.
