25th Stage - Nullarbor Roadhouse to Highway stop 70.3km, 30th Jan 2001

Runners in the Big Red Sky Trans Australia Footrace showed their individual tactics with Anatoliy Kruglikov the race leader not pushing himself too hard all the way till the end. Although he was in the leading pack of runners including Andrei Derxen and Kaname Sakurai he showed his strength and power only in the last final 500 metres of the race.

All three racers were shoulder to shoulder until one kilometre from the finish line when the two Russians surged strongly and dropped the Japanese runner Sakurai. During the final 500 metres we witnessed the most dramatic finish so far were the two Russians were battling like cyclists at the finish of a Tour de France. They were sprinting to the finish line, zig zagging all over the road trying to get a lead. With the final 50 metres to go, Kruglikov proved why he is the best runner in the field, winning the stage by a mere three seconds from Derxen with Sakurai coming in a comfortable third.

Wolfgang Schwerk from Germany had Mihaly Molnar of Hungary has lost precious time due to injury and now only leads Sakurai for third place of overall standings by three minutes. The leading Australian, Mick Francis is running strong and still sitting comfortably sixt.

Today the runners experienced a magnificent scenery change from the flat treeless Nullarbor Plain to the hilly and natural bush settings of the Yalata Aboriginal land.
