Race organizers Jesse Dale Riley and Bernie Farmer say traffic is ususally heavy on Fridays in Perth and the police asked them to begin the race on Saturday instead. As a result, the route for the first four stages of the event have been compressed into three days and the overall distance covered shortened by 27 kilometres. Several changes have also been made in the route mapped out for runners in the closing stages of the race. Meanwhile, for the organizers have announced that the main sponsor for the "Race of Fire" is a high-tech Perth employment recruitment company called Big Red Sky. "The name fits perfectly with the theme of the race," says Riley. Pre-race events a press conference in Canberra at 11 a.m. on Dec. 20. Pat Farmer will represent the Centenary of Federation at the conference. Also present will be representatives of the sponsor and bush balladeer Martin Bowland performing a song written specifically for the race. Riley met Bowland in 1998 when he ran his own race across Australia. On Jan. 3, a photo shoot with runners and members of the West Coast Eagles football club will be held in Perth, followed on Jan. 4 by a barbeque for athletes and the media at the West Australian Marathon Club in Perth.
