Runner Dies During Trans Australia Race

Runner Dies During Trans Australia Race

2nd February 2001

Message from Bernie Farmer, the race organiser of the Tran Australia Race :

At 6.20am this morning, TransAust Runner, Bryan Smith died whilst running (2.5km). It is believed to be of a heart attack but that will be confirmed at a later date. Bryan was receiving a drink from his wife, Janet at the time and was looking forward to running with a tail wind until he complained of feeling dizzy.

Bryan's wife Janet wants the race to continue. Bernie Farmer will put this to the runners tonight and it will be entirely their decision. There is some talk of renaming the race in Bryan's honour and also raising money for a Trust Fund.

The Tran Australia Footrace had completed 26 daily stages of between 45km and 100km - from a total of 62. The race started in Perth on 6th January and is due to finish in Canberra on March 11th.
