IAU World Trail Challenge try-out
From the IAU website at http://www.iau.org.tw/news_detail.php?Id=231 :
“Looking for broader horizons” is one of the strategic targets that have been but forward by the present Executive Council. The introduction of the IAU 50 km Trophy and the attempt to include some of our competitions in the Commonwealth Championships are examples in this regard.
Bearing in mind that trail races are becoming more and more popular in many parts of the world we asked our Trail Commission to investigate the interest and feasibility of staging a world trail event.
This Commission, chaired by Nancy Hobbs, has done excellent spadework and came up with a number of suggestions and recommendations that convinced the Council of the potential value of a future World Trail Challenge.
We are very grateful that the organisers of the Sunmart Texas Trail Endurance Runs (Huntsville, TX, USA) are offering us the possibility to have a try out edition on December 9th. Some of the top international ultradistance runners will be invited to measure their strength against the trail specialists in a 50 mile race on a gently rolling course (forest trails and dirt roads) in the Huntsville State Park.
We are really looking forward to this interesting encounter and hope that this try out edition will generate the germs for a future full size IAU World Trail Challenge.
Dawn Tiller, an Australian ultra runner who has previously come 3rd at the SunMart 50 Miler, agrees that the course and organisation of the race is world class and would be a very suitable location for a World Challenge trial.
